CLOTHING STORE
IN BRATISLAVA
„Die architektonische Lösung ist so This store may rightly be counted among the well-done
ones. Away from shop windows exerting purchase pres-
konzipiert, dass jeder Modedesigner einen sure, from the “shopping event” averse to patience and
gleichwertigen Raum besitzt.“ an exaggerated product staging – back to cosy browsing,
the actual experience. In a shopping centre in Bratislava,
Peter Gonda a fashion store shows on 200 square metres of sales
space where sustainability is hidden in consumption.
W hat does one best start with when praising the interior design of
the SOM Store for clothing? With the construction and materials
or with the spatial arrangement and presentation of goods? U-profiles
made of galvanized sheet steel, which usually function as a substruc-
ture in dry construction, characterize the impressive appearance of the
space as a clearly visible design element. While, in other places, their
axial dimension is subordinate to the panel grid of the planking, the
steel profiles, now freely arranged, form closed wall surfaces and also
multi-layered compositions below the ceiling. They are likewise used
as a bordering rail for linear ceiling luminaires – a successful blend
of aesthetics and functionality throughout. Another special feature is
the easy assembly and disassembly of the U-profiles. Their product life
cycle is being extended which is why, to a certain extent, the fashion
store resembles a component warehouse. However, an (honest) circular
Wandkonstruktion • Wall structure concept, meaning the possible subsequent use of the interior – which is
undoubtedly the case here – is not enough on its own to make a store
sustainable. Even if the product range is not the responsibility of the
shop design, the interior design can have a considerable influence on
spontaneous purchases that prompt customers to make rash and unsu-
stainable purchasing decisions. Peter Gonda of D415, architect Zoran
Samol and engineer Luboš Šoška frame and delimit the sales area with
clear edges. The walls are installed at a 45-degree angle to the contact
route, thus creating a joy of discovery for the customers. Only when wal-
king along the walls does one move from the introverted to the extrover-
ted perspective of the shop. Now, the collections of Slovak and Czech
fashion designers are presented separately in the equal spaces in bet-
ween. The shopping experience is the factor which is determined here,
not the purchase decision! A centrally placed piece of wooden furniture
displays fashion accessories and also serves as a bench, for example
for trying on accessories or as a spectator seat for small fashion shows.
This neutral retail architecture is also sustainable because it allows for
