MYKITA
IN MUNICH
Anything but what was to be expected: The interior archi-
tect Stephanie Thatenhorst has designed a branch for
Mykita which, although it is in line with the usual brand
CI, it upgrades the latter in a contemporary way. In the
premises from the late 19th century, a proven minimalist
design thus meets experimental-fresh colours, forms and
textures which are definitely new for the eyewear brand.
I t is not even 20 years ago that Moritz Krueger has founded his own
brand of eyeglasses and, inspired by the first location of his company,
a former children’s day-care centre, gave it the name Mykita. Since that
point in time, the company has developed into an internationally ope-
rating eyewear expert with its own numerous collections and a manu-
facture in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In cooperation with independent designers,
this is where trendy eyeglass frames are manufactured which have a
clear design vocabulary and are sold in Mykita specialist stores all over
the world, from Berlin all the way to Mexico-City and to Taipei. One of
the total of 19 branches is now found just a stone’s throw away from
the Munich Hofbräuhaus in a corner building – which has been comple-
ted in 1881, is listed until today and was designed by the architect Georg
Joseph von Hauberrisser. The interior architect Stephanie Thatenhorst
was responsible for designing the store appearance and conceived a co-
lourful variation of the Mykita corporate interior design. So far known
for her focus on minimalist, white to anthracite store furnishings with
polished screed floors, backlit perforated metal sheet presentation
walls and aircraft-container configurations as consulting islands, Ste-
phanie Thatenhorst now resorts to more colour and texture. By still pre-
serving proven components of shop fitting, the store measuring 170
square metres is visibly divided into zones with changes of materials
and presentation systems. New, diverse sales scenarios are thus produ-
ced which are characterized either by coral-red carpeting, by bronze-co-
loured mirrors and by a consultation counter of natural stone and black
steel or by chromium-plated surfaces, green- to yellow-tinted glass ste-
les, by the installation of corner mirrors and by extraordinary items of
seating furniture. In everything, the colour shades which have been se-
lected appear to reflect the colour spectrum of the Mykita sunglasses:
Although playful and expressive, this above all creates an overall look
that is in line with the brand essence and extending from the windows
allowing an unobstructed view all the way to the refraction room which
