3 Die über eine Million Einwohner von Monterrey, der Hauptstadt des mexikanischen
Bundesstaats Nuevo Léon, werden beim Shoppen wohl bald die Qual der Wahl
haben: Am südlichen Stadtrand entsteht derzeit das 30.000-Quadratmeter-Einkaufsareal
„Pueblo Serena“. Doch nicht nur geshoppt werden kann dort nach Lust und Laune. Wem
der ganze Trubel zu viel ist, findet in der Pfarrkirche El Señor de la Misericordia die not -
wendige Erholung. Die wörtlich dem „Herrn der Barmherzigkeit“ gewidmete Kirche er -
hebt sich nämlich mitten auf dem Hauptplatz des Einkaufskomplexes. Entworfen wurde
sie vom Architekturstudio Moneo Brock aus Madrid. Auch wenn die skulpturale Gestalt
anderes vermuten lässt, basiert der Grundriss des Sakralbaus auf der ursprünglichsten
Form der christlichen Kirche: einer Basilika. Das lang gestreckte, 15 Meter hohe Mittel -
schiff ist in der Längsachse zum Altar ausgerichtet. In den niedrigeren Seitenschiffen sind
jeweils Kapellen untergebracht: Richtung Westen eine Taufkapelle, an deren Längs seite
eine Glaswand Ausblicke in den angrenzenden Innenhof bietet, und Richtung Osten drei
kleinere Kapellen unter hohen, schmalen Lichtschächten. Direkt über dem Altar befindet
sich ein weiteres Oberlicht, das durch eine viergeteilte Wand zum Kirchenraum hin ein
Kreuz erstrahlen lässt. Auch für den Fall, dass die Kapazität von 350 Personen ge sprengt
wird, ist vorgesorgt: Über die vollständige Öffnung des elfeinhalb Meter breiten Haupt -
eingangs erweitert sich der Kirchenraum nach außen auf den Platz. vc

basilica. The elongated, 15 metres high central nave is oriented towards the altar in its
longitudinal axis. In the lower side naves are chapels: towards the west, a baptistery
with its glass wall on the long side offering views of the adjacent interior courtyard
and, towards the east, three smaller chapels below high, narrow light wells. Right
above the altar is an additional skylight which, due to a wall divided into four sections
towards the church interior, creates a shining cross there. In the event that the capacity
for 350 people is exceeded, there is a solution: By completely opening the eleven
metres wide main entrance, the church space is extended outdoors into the square.
