W ie eine moderne Ruine steht das „Monument for an Open Society“ am Ran de des
großen Wasserbassins im Arsenale von Venedig. Die rohe Beton fer tig teil struktur ist
ein Werk des Brüsseler Architekten Ale xander D’Hooghe und entstand als Beitrag zur dies-
jährigen Architektur biennale. Ge dank lich, so verrät ein kleines Kunststoffmodell, sind die
sechs zu rechtwinkligen Räumen verbundenen Be tontore mit ihren Qua drat-, Bogen- und
Fünfecksöffnungen als Fragment einer prin zipiell welt umspannenden Mega struktur zu
lesen, die alle Funk tio nen des mensch lichen Zusammenlebens be her bergt. Was tatsäch-
lich wie ein verspäte tes Groß pro jekt der utopie verliebten 1960er-Jahre aussieht, ist für
D’Hooghe und sei ne Or ga ni zation for Per ma nent Modernity vor allem ein öffentlichkeits-
wirksames Ne ben produkt. Denn ur sprüng lich wurde das Betonplattensystem mit seinen
signifi kan ten Ausspa run gen nicht für die Präsentation in Venedig entwickelt, sondern für
einen überdachten Fleisch- und Gemü se markt im als Ein wanderer-Viertel bekannten
Brüsseler Stadtteil An derlecht. Der neue Markt, der im vergangenen Jahr seine Tore öffnete,
ist hier Teil eines umfassenden Stadtsa nie rungs projektes im Umfeld der historischen
Schlachthofhallen. Was das Idealprojekt in Venedig mit der tatsächlichen Realisierung in
Brüssel verbindet, ist die Idee einer wachsenden Struk tur. So sollen auf dem Dach des
Marktes zukünftig Gastronomieangebote, Anbauflächen und Gewächshäuser entstehen.

T he “Monument for an Open Society” stands like a modern ruin on the edge of
the large water basin in the Venice Arsenale. The rough precast–concrete struc-
ture is a work by Brussels architect Alexander D’Hooghe and was built as the contri-
bution to this year’s Biennale of Architecture. As a small synthetic model indicates,
the six concrete gates connected to form rectangular rooms with their square, arched
and pentagonal openings are to be perceived as the fragment of a worldwide mega-
structure which contains all the functions of human coexistence. What actually looks
like a late major project of the 1960s enamoured with utopia is for D’Hooghe and his
Organization for Permanent Modernity above all a high-profile by-product. This is
because, originally, the system of concrete panels with its significant openings was
not developed for being presented in Venice but for a covered meat- and vegetable
market in the Brussels district of Anderlecht known as a neighbourhood of immi-
grants. The new market, which opened its gates last year, is there part of an extensive
urban renovation project in the area of the historic abattoir halls. What connects the
idealistic project in Venice with the actual implementation in Brussels is the idea of
a growing structure. Thus, in future, restaurants, cultivation areas and greenhouses
are to be built on the roof of the market.
