CASA HOPE
IN BARCELONA
Inspired by Bauhaus ideas but also by the design possi-
bilities of the postmodern age, in 1988 Antoni Roselló
Til 1988 designed a single-family home which is charac-
terized by primary geometries and its hillside location
of the La Floresta garden city. More than three decades
later, Cierto Estudio was commissioned to upgrade the
expressive building for a new generation of owners.
O ne might also call Casa Hope (named after the daughter of the buil-
ding client) the “house of the atriums”, the reason being that the
three-storey residential complex not only develops upwards on a slope
but that it also includes two atriums and a spacious stairwell in the in-
Grundriss 1. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +1 terior which has been designed with a bookcase extending over two le-
vels. The open spaces which thus result connect the levels as well as the
interior and the exterior spaces in a highly effective way; they ensure na-
tural illumination of the sequence of rooms without any direct sunlight
and, in addition, produce a high degree of privacy which is even increa-
sed by the dimensions and the shapes of the window openings. This is
due to the fact that, whereas some of the windows oriented towards the
courtyards and the garden are ceiling-high and large, the windows in the
bathroom, towards the street as well as towards the carport have been
deliberately designed to be small like portholes. For the necessary refur-
bishment of the residence, the clients and the planners attached impor-
tance to preserving the existing layout- and room structures. To all the
same give the home a touch suitable for the new inhabitants, the range
of colours and materials of the interior design was expanded. “We wan-
ted to use colour as the main tool for creating new spatial relationships
by producing contrasts and overlapping and by benefitting from them”,

black floor tiles are complemented with shades of pink and green which,
depending on the use of the area for which they are intended, are ap-
plied to fixed installations, new tile surfaces and for painting windows,
walls or ceilings. Sophisticated, in part newly designed solutions for sto-
rage room ensure a well-ordered landscaped interior where there is ab-
solutely nothing to unintentionally distract from the effect of the room
geometries and of the eclectically assembled furniture. The refurbish-
ment of the residential complex is rounded off with the redesign of the
garden where, instead of a closed pavilion, there is now an open pergola
towards the newly added swimming pool and where the colours pink
