T he metropolitan area called Grande São Paulo with its more than
12 13 21 million inhabitants ranks among the vastest urban agglomera-
tions in the whole wide world. Those who live here know only too well
what densification means. Approximately 120 kilometres west of the
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan mega city, one gets a different picture. This is where the Residencial
Fazenda Alta Vista settlement is located – a rural refuge close to a small
nature reserve. Here, there certainly is plenty of space! On a site mea-
suring 1,000 square metres and sloping eight metres, Vereda Arquitetos

home. Their concept for the house on a slope? A spatial continuum

between below and above, between entrance- and garden side! This
was achieved very impressively with the open centre of the residence
– the generous volume of the living- and dining room. This airy space

seating steps bridge the difference in height. The living- and dining
room is laterally bordered by massive volumes built from of concrete
blocks which, analogous to the topography, are partly embedded in
2 1 the ground. On the one side is the single-storey kitchen wing, on the
other, the two-level bedroom-, bathroom- and studio wing. Everything
is combined under a massive but seemingly floating concrete roof
measuring 14 by 14 metres which looks like the protective canopy of an
Grundriss Obergeschoss • Upper floor plan archaeological site. This is because, detached from everything situated
below, it only rests on four supports. Hardly noticeable glass panes wit-
hout profiles fill the gap. Thanks to the “flying roof”, the visual relati-
onships to the outside and the glass façade of the terrace that can be
opened, the feeling sets in of being outside even when inside. Attrac-
tive are the different heights inside the house and the mutual visual
connections. The complete living room can be seen from the mezza-
nine of the parents’ bedroom. Not only the front and the back of the
house are thus visually and spatially connected. The side wings as well
communicate the feeling: “Everything in sight!” If necessary, the ma-
