DUPLEX APARTMENT
IN BARCELONA
In 2015, Arquitectura-G were awarded the Emerging
2 3 4 6 7 Architect Prize of the European Union. With minima-
lism and consistency, the young Spanish architectural
office keeps demonstrating its conceptual strength,
particularly in residential construction. As with this

maisonette, a conversion in Barcelona. The sun now
rises in the formerly gloomy rooms...
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan
S ometimes it is the terracotta tiles on the floor and the ceiling, at
other times a carpet landscape and “shades of grey”, then again the
floors and furniture covered with sisal … Arquitectura-G are known for

their individual, uncompromisingly implemented ideas when it comes
to materials and rooms. An additional example of this approach is also

this duplex apartment in Barcelona. Sunny yellow, a clear structure and
8
an enormous amount of daylight characterize the residence measuring
a total of 150 square metres. The apartment is merely five metres wide
but a remarkable 17.5 metres deep and spreads over the ground floor
Grundriss Obergeschoss • Upper floor plan and the first upper level of a three-storey house surrounded by buil-
dings with up to eight levels. Before the conversion, the inner areas had
been dark, the layouts convoluted. The architects discovered unused
potential in the courtyard. To optimally benefit from this “light catcher”,
Arquitectura-G had no less than 25 square metres of floor area removed
on the upper level. In view of the strained housing market in the design
1 Eingang • Entrance 7 Innenhof/Terrasse • Courtyard/terrace metropolis a sacrifice which was worthwhile all the same! This is be-
2 Elternschlafzimmer • Master bedroom 8 Kinderzimmer • Children’s room cause, in this way, an approximately six metres high, striking open
3 Elternbad • Parents’ bathroom 9 Badezimmer Kinder • Children’s bathroom
4 Küche • Kitchen 10 Büro • Study room space was produced. The façade is now extensively open. White walls
5 Abstellraum • Storage room 11 Luftraum • Void
6 Wohnzimmer • Living room 12 Balkon • Balcony and ceilings reflect the daylight. Overall, however, the colour yellow sets
the tone! Wall- and floor tiles, kitchen- and bathroom furniture designed
by the architects themselves, sofas, partitions, sliding doors, the carpe-
ting and the newel stair are immersed in this cheerful colour. Filigree
grates for the kitchen, stairs and the balcony look lightweight and are
transparent. The space-saving organization of the layout is interesting.
On the upper level, the bathroom and the dressing room are the pas-
sage to the children’s rooms instead of a corridor; ceiling-high sliding
doors create generous room interconnections. On the ground floor, the
courtyard extends the living area outside. And there is even a minima-
list light-permeable balcony consisting of grids. On the living-room fa-
çade, there are no stairs but only delicate metal rungs leading vertically
up to this open area. No doubt it requires some courage and sportiness
Längsschnitt • Longitudinal section to climb this ladder. Less material is hardly possible.
