T he building closes a gap in the development of the district, growing since the
1930s, with loosely distributed residential buildings. The dense greening, the quiet
residential area and the proximity to the city centre of Kempten characterize the excel-
lent location. The site is slightly ascending. Also decisive for the shape was the clients’
wish to have ground-level access to the garden from as many lounges as possible. The
spatial programme includes a generous living- and dining area with an integrated rea-
ding- and playing gallery, three children’s rooms as well as a parents’ bedroom with
the corresponding bathrooms and also a guest area. The building completely consists
of core-insulated concrete walls as a semi-prefabricated construction. Close to the sur-
face, heating and cooling registers as well as acoustic absorbers were integrated into
the semi-prefabricated ceilings. This so-called audio-thermal ceiling construction was
specifically developed and implemented for the project. The floors on the ground level
are seamlessly coated with dark-coloured cement. On the upper level, rustic oak floor-
boards and oak windows correspond with the concrete surfaces.

textile elements. The open-plan living room was thus designed with a ceiling height of
3.8 metres and completely glazed longitudinal sides which resulted in exclusively
acoustically hard surfaces. For aesthetic reasons, the customarily installed acoustic ele-
ments such as ceiling sails or suspended acoustic ceilings were to be foregone. That
was why architect Stephan Walter from the Kempten F64 architectural office decided
in favour of installing the Audiotherm ceiling developed together with us which not
only includes the functions of heating and cooling but was also to measurably improve
the acoustic qualities of the room. The heating function works according to the princi-
ple of heat radiation via energetic waves similar to the effect of sunrays. Already in the
factory and close to the surface, heating- and cooling pipes similar to in the case of
underfloor-heating were integrated into the thermally separated prefabricated concrete
ceilings (Green Code climate ceiling). Thanks to the thermal separation, response
times of less than an hour for heating and cooling became possible. This heating sys-
tem is not convective as is underfloor heating. This avoids the otherwise produced air
draft and the raising of house dust this causes. Since the air only circulates minimally,
the existing house dust consisting of mites, mould and spores remains on the floor and
is not inhaled. In summer, this system can also be used for cooling: The cooling load
case is covered by flow temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees Celsius via the heating- and
cooling pipes described above. In this project, both load cases – heating and cooling –
are sustainably covered by a reversible heat pump in connection with two earth pro-
bes measuring 110 metres in length. A building envelope with a high level of thermal
insulation as well as a controlled ventilation system with heat recovery complements
the energy concept.

the state of technology known today, it has so far not been possible to combine the

performance features of heating and cooling directly with acoustic installations in a

concrete ceiling. Customarily, suspended ceiling systems are used for requirements of
this kind. These have the disadvantage that they extremely reduce the ceiling height.

construction period. Apart from this, these systems are considerably more expensive
than the Audiotherm ceiling described above. The thermally separated climate-control-
ling ceiling with its response times has already been developed by our company in
2003 and meanwhile applied for numerous projects regarding residential-, public- and
commercial construction. Thanks to the integration of the strip absorbers of expanded-
glass granulate developed by the Fraunhofer Institut in Stuttgart, an acoustic efficiency
of the ceilings could also be achieved. Our special thanks go to the architect, Stephan
Walter, and the clients who supported this innovative development as a first-time pilot
application. By now, the audio-thermal system has also been successfully installed in
