NOXX HOTEL
IN MARBURG
Marburg is calling! After two years of renovation and the
addition of another storey to a historic workshop building,
the six-storey NOXX Hotel has been open since the end of
last year. This completes the circle of a forward-looking
transformation and revitalization of the listed locomoti-
ve-shed site. Frankfurt-based Studio Aberja planned the
interior design of the final construction phase.
D eveloped in 1847, the site was once an important maintenance
location for Deutsche Bahn. After having been decommissioned in
1989, decades of neglect left the locomotive shed and workshop building
in a state of increasing disrepair until the property was put up for pri-
vatization in 2017. Investor and operator Gunter Schneider won the bid
with his vision of transforming the site into a place for encounters with
a restaurant and an event venue, a start-up hub and co-working spaces,
as well as a hotel. He implemented his plan in exemplary fashion by
commissioning the architects Bernward Paulick, Büro Feldmann Archi-
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan tekten and Studio Aberja. The recently opened NOXX Hotel completes
the ambitious concept: with 82 now available rooms in the categories
called Essential, Comfort, Loft and Suite, business travellers, city trip-
pers and long-stay guests will definitely find what they are looking for.
From the lobby and the communal and breakfast area on the ground
floor of the historic workshop building to the fitness area on the first
floor and the seminar rooms on the first and sixth floors, all the way to
the hotel bar and the rooftop terrace on the top floor with panoramic
views over Marburg’s historic old town – no wish is left unfulfilled here.
Studio Aberja’s holistic design approach takes into account both the
architectural conditions and the historical identity of the building. This
is because the interior design was based on the studio’s enthusiasm
for the innovative technical solutions that the client wanted and imple-
mented. The Frankfurt-based firm ingeniously staged the 24 supports
that carry the superstructure of the workshop hall as part of a spatial
sculpture and furthermore skilfully integrated them into the lobby fur-
niture and lighting. Standardized built-in furniture and a space-defining
washbasin solution are a fresh, progressive and extremely smart answer
to the question of how to design a variety of different hotel-room layouts
in a uniform manner. Last but not least, the NOXX Signature luminaire,
which was developed jointly by Studio Aberja and investor Schneider,
with its parametrically designed wave structure reminiscent of the iris of
