W ie kann ein asiatisches Restaurant mit Strandblick in Nordspanien
aussehen, in dem roher Fisch auf der Speisekarte die Hauptrolle
spielt? Zooco Estudio fanden für das „El Camino“ in Santander eine nicht
naheliegende, überraschende Lösung. Farblich und materiell prägen das
Restaurant einfache und doch edle, zeitlose Oberflächen aus Holz und
rotem Ton, die auf der asiatisch-japanischen Ästhetik basieren. Denn eine
klischeehafte „Meereswelt“ wollte das Büro für Architektur und Innenar-
chitektur in jedem Fall vermeiden. Abstrakt-subtil spiegelt sich das Thema
Wasser stattdessen im Restaurant-Design wider. Von Wellen inspirierte
Rundungen kennzeichnen den zentralen Tresen und die Sitznischen ent-
lang der Wände. Gefertigt wurden diese aus warmem Holz, gepolstert
mit terrakottafarbigem Stoff. Die Wände sind im mittleren Teil mit schup-
penförmig angeordneten Tonziegeln verkleidet, oben mit gewellten Wand-
panelen aus transluzentem, reflektierendem Kunststoff. Im übertragenen
Sinn soll sich in diesen das Glitzern des Wassers widerspiegeln. Den
Boden bekleiden Terrazzoplatten der Kollektion „Le Veneziane“ von Flo-
rim – eine Referenz an den nahe gelegenen Sandstrand. Die ungeordnete
Körnung lässt die Fugen nahezu unsichtbar werden, wodurch der Ein-
druck eines durchgehenden Bodenbelags entsteht. Hier, im „El Camino“,
treffen Geschmackswelten aus Japan, China, Thailand, Korea, Indien, den
Philippinen und Vietnam aufeinander. Ausgezeichnet, meinen die Gäste.

Zooco Estudio came up with a surprising solution for El Camino in San-
tander. Simple yet elegant, timeless surfaces made of wood and red
clay, based on Asian-Japanese aesthetics, characterise the restaurant
in terms of colour and material. The architecture and interior design
studio wanted to avoid a clichéd “sea world” at all costs. Instead, the
restaurant design reflects the theme of water in an abstract and subtle
way. Wave-inspired curves distinguish the central bar counter and the
seating niches along the walls. These are made of warm wood and
upholstered with terracotta-coloured fabric. The central section of the
walls is clad with clay tiles arranged in a scale-like pattern, while cor-
rugated wall panels made of translucent, reflective plastic were used in
the upper section. In a figurative sense, these are intended to evoke the
glistening of water. The floor is clad in terrazzo tiles from Florim’s “Le
Veneziane” collection – a reference to the nearby sandy beach. The ran-
domised grain makes the joints almost disappear, creating the impres-
sion of a continuous floor covering. Here, at El Camino, flavours from
Japan, China, Thailand, Korea, India, the Philippines and Vietnam come
together. Excellent, according to the guests. Just like the interior design.
