Das Restaurant in der ehemaligen Turnhalle • The restaurant in the former gymnasium
D as 1915 im Stil des Historismus mit Elementen traditioneller bergi-
scher Häuser errichtete Schulgebäude mitsamt der 1980 erbauten
Turnhalle liegt in der Altstadt von Schwelm, am Rande des Bergischen
Landes. Bis 2014 befand sich hier die Gemeinschafts-Grundschule West-
falendamm. Seit Umbau und Eröffnung erfreuen sich „Das Schulhaus“-
Hotel und das Restaurant „Die Turnhalle“ großer Resonanz, denn die Ar-
chitekten Uwe Hugendick und Lars Wehnau hatten großen Wert darauf
gelegt, dass der traditionelle Charme des Schulhauses durch Umbau und
Renovierung nicht verloren ging. Originaler Stuck und Schnitzereien, die
für das Bergische Land typischen Schieferverkleidungen sollten ebenso
erhalten bleiben wie der Schulcharakter des Gebäudes. Und so zieht sich
das Thema Schule von der Idee zur Umnutzung über Entwurf und Pla-
nung bis hin zur Einrichtung und Gestaltung wie ein roter Faden durch.
Überall gibt es liebevoll arrangierte Details wie alte Zeugnisse und Fotos,
die an die frühere Schulzeit erinnern. Die Beschichtungsmaterialien wur-
den so ausgewählt, dass sie nicht nur die gewünschte Optik erzielen, son-
dern strapazier- und reinigungsfähig sind, um kostengünstige Renovie-

ring that the traditional charm of the school building was maintained.
Original stucco and carvings, the slate cladding typical of the region and
the school character were to be preserved. Thus, the school theme runs
like a common thread though the project – from the conversion idea, to
design and planning, through to furnishings and design. Lovingly arran-

look, but to be hard-wearing and easy to clean to allow for cost-effective
