S ubtiles Vermischen von Kulturen ist angesagt: Ein ehemaliges Londoner Postamt aus
den 1960er-Jahren verwandelte das Innenarchitektur-Duo von Child Studio in ein ja-
panisches Restaurant, das seiner prominenten Nachbarschaft durchaus würdig ist. Im
Bezirk St. John’s Wood befindet es sich in der Nähe der Abbey Road Studios und des be-
rühmten Crosswalks, der das ikonische Beatles-Plattencover ziert. Vor allem Referenzen
an die Architektur der Spätmoderne der 1960er-Jahre – gleichzeitig Schaffenszeit der er-
folgreichsten Band der Musikgeschichte – flossen in den Entwurf ein. In Kombination mit
dezenten japanischen Bezügen wie der Materialauswahl, wiederkehrender geometri-
scher Muster und handgemachter Holzarbeiten entsteht ein Dialog zwischen europäi-
schem und fernöstlichem Design. Angelehnt an die Fassade der benachbarten St. John’s
Wood Library schmücken dunkle Kirschholzpaneele die Wandflächen. Ein halbrundes
Separee aus Glasbausteinen formt einen privaten Rückzugsort, zoniert das Restaurant in
zwei Bereiche und bezieht sich damit auf die Fassade der Bücherei. Den Kern der Loka-
lität bildet eine freistehende Kochinsel, die sich – verkleidet mit einer reflektierenden
Oberfläche aus Stahl – elegant in den Materialkanon einfügt und um ausgewählte Desi-
gnikonen der 1950er- und -60er-Jahre ergänzt wird. Entstanden ist ein durchweg kultiges
Gestaltungskonzept, das trotz aller nostalgischer Bezüge alles andere als altbacken wirkt.

S ubtle blending of cultures is the order of the day: a former 1960s London post of-
fice has been transformed by the Child Studio interior design duo into a Japanese
restaurant worthy of its prominent neighbourhood. Located in the St. John’s Wood di-
strict, it is close to Abbey Road Studios and the famous crosswalk that graces the iconic
Beatles record cover. Above all, references to the architecture of late modernism in the
1960s – at the same time the creative period of the most successful band in music hi-
story – were incorporated into the design. A dialogue between European and Far Ea-
stern design emerges from the combination of subtle Japanese references such as the
choice of materials, recurring geometric patterns and handmade woodwork. Based on
the façade of the neighbouring St. John’s Wood Library, dark cherry wood panels adorn
the walls. A semi-circular private room made of glass blocks forms a private retreat,
zoning the restaurant into two areas and thus referencing the library’s façade. The core
of the restaurant is a free-standing cooking unit, which – clad in a reflective steel enve-
lope – elegantly blends into the material canon and is complemented by selected de-
sign icons from the 1950s and 60s. The result is a thoroughly iconic design concept
that, despite nostalgic references, seems anything but old-fashioned.
