BAR BLAU
IN STUTTGART
„Das Setting versteht sich mehr als It is all a question of perception: not only the Old Mas-
ters knew that the visual experience of spatial depth is
gebaute Stimmung denn als subject to the laws of perspective. On the ground floor
architektonischer Raum.“ of a residential building in Stuttgart, the architects at
SOMAA created a bar that surprises with unexpected
SOMAA angles and a complex use of colours and materials in
a very small space.
P eople coming here in the evening exactly know their way: wit-
hout signs and logos, guided only by a blue illuminated square,
the guests step through an equally blue door into the small and indi-
rectly illuminated vestibule of an apartment building dating from the
Gründerzeit period in the western part of Stuttgart. Bar Blau (Bar
Blue) is hidden behind a heavy and dark green velvet curtain, which
is doubled in the round mirror positioned opposite. Situated on a
busy inner-city thoroughfare, Hadi A. Tandawardaja and Tobias Boch-
mann, the two founders of the interior design and architecture firm
SOMAA, Stuttgart, created an intimate bar that is completely introver-
ted, thus allowing all the guests to forget the hectic pace of the day
over drinks, tapas and other dishes. At first glance, the dimensions of
the space are only vaguely perceptible. Monochrome also as overlap-
ping coloured areas in different shades of blue use the aerial perspec-
tive effect and thus suggest distance and depth. Brass-coloured
frames structure the seating area. They are stepped from the entrance
to the imaginary vanishing point, where a high mirror reflects the
image, thus reinforcing the illusion of infinity. In comparison to that,
the lateral bar area, with its dark colouring and soft, muted curtains
and carpets on the walls and floor forming a discreet retreat, almost
seems like a sideshow. While the whole bar counter made of black-
lacquered wood fades into the background, only the brass-clad inside
of the cubic built-in unit shines in the dim light and attracts the at-
tention of guests with its glittering mirrored surfaces. In the opposite
to this effect, differently tinted glass panes reflect the counter area,
dissolving the room contours and creating a surreal impression all
around. Contrary to this, contrasting upholstery elements made of na-
tural, cognac-coloured leather provide a clear orientation. From the
private niche with a table, to the communicative couch, to the casual
seating arrangement, the elements create different lounge qualities
and underline the sense and purpose of the location: to enjoy the
