BERGAMO HOTEL
IN LUDWIGSBURG
Planned as a hunting lodge and converted into a resi-
dence, Ludwigsburg Palace is today the largest intact
Baroque palace in Germany. The architectural office
Von M has given the planned city form the 18 century
th
its first CO -neutral hotel. Sleeping in a climate-friendly

environment and with a view of historical architecture,
guests can dream of the past, present and future.

architects Von M, responsible for the Hotel Bergamo, create a striking
bridge between adjacent, heterogeneous baroque buildings and inno-
vative architecture. The five-storey building, located on the specifically
demolished access to the underground car park, forms the missing and
urgently needed spatial edge in the centre of Ludwigsburg. In addition
to its both striking and unobtrusive exterior, the modular system buil-
ding made of over 440 cubic metres of wood impresses with its high-
quality interiors, which are characterised by light beech wood panel-
ling, natural materials and ingeniously designed textiles. Loving details
such as integrated seating niches at the window with views as far as
the palace that is so characteristic of the city as well as smart, space-
saving sanitary cores turn 55 rooms into true spatial miracles. You can't

to prove his staying power. Already at the beginning of several revitali-
sation measures in the northern part of the city centre, the operator of
a Ludwigsburg boarding house had spoken out in favour of the con-
struction of this hotel. For him, the small plot of land in the shadow of
the Marstall-Center — a shopping centre with residential towers, which
was considered a building sin - was perfect because of its prominent
location. Although the effective area was too small for an independent
hotel operation, Kilgus was able to combine and outsource administra-
tive structures based on the aspect of a second hotel. Nevertheless, se-
veral debates on the construction and appearance with the design
council, an abrupt withdrawal of investors and increases in construc-
tion costs followed. The fact that this building, which meets the latest
ecological standards, can soon contribute to the revitalisation of the re-
developed neighbourhood is mainly due to the high degree of finely
tuned prefabrication of the rooms. For example, it took only five days
after the construction of the stiffening concrete core to erect the con-
