CRAZY PIANOS CLUB
IN DEN HAAG
After 20 successful years, it was time for the renowned
Crazy Pianos Club on the Scheveningen beach prome-
nade to have its interior redesigned. The Spanish ar-
chitectural office El Equipo Creativo took on the task
and designed an expressive interior, which is intended
to make the club attractive and sustainable for a broa-
der and younger audience.
I n 2010, Oliver Franz Schmidt, Natali Canas del Pozo and Lucas
Echeveste started working together and founded El Equipo Crea-
tivo, an interior design studio based in Barcelona. They have specia-
lised in interior design of gastronomic, commercial and brand flag
spaces. With great success: many of their implemented projects have
already won international awards, including the AIT Award. El Equipo
Creativo are of the opinion that good interior design must tell stories
and make rooms tangible. Together with the owners of the Crazy Pia-
nos Club, an interior design was therefore developed that gives the
rooms an impressive and exciting aura. The trio met the client's wish
to transform the previously rather unspectacular and outdated premi-
ses into a club with a freaky and different appeal by introducing a
multitude of cinematic references that boost the atmosphere to an al-
most surreal level. Only the two red pianos that gave the club its
Grundriss • Floor plan name remained after the reconstruction. Staged on a small stage, mu-
sicians play the songs requested by guests on them every day. In the
course of an evening, the central area in the middle of the club is
transformed into a dance floor - for this purpose the tables give way
to the dancing audience. The remaining seats on the podiums allow
a perfect overview and increase the enjoyment of the music; the or-
ganic contour of the podiums additionally supports the guests' joy of
movement and interaction. Two bars act as a counterpart to the pia-
nos. The "Catwalk Bar", accessible via steps from both sides, is both
a stage and a bar at the same time and serves to see and be seen.
Less centrally positioned, on the outer façade, the "Blow Bar" provides
a quieter and more intimate atmosphere and provides space for con-
versation. So, depending on the mood, every guest can find the ideal
place. The various areas of use are each characterised by changes in
level, the connecting element being the wall and floor coverings desi-
gned with expressive floral patterns. In good weather conditions, the
pianos can be placed on the spacious outdoor terrace, which has also
Schnitt • Section been redesigned in accordance with the interior concept.
