                                                                                        The Espressolab chain founded in Istanbul not only

                                                                                        serves high-quality coffee, the founders also have their
                                                                                        quality standard projected into the premises. Each
                                                                                        branch worldwide is individually designed by an archi-
                                                                                        tect. This was also the case for the most recent branch

                                                                                        in the heart of Istanbul where Bilgehan Senel has de-
                                                                                        signed an inspiring place to enjoy, relax and work.

                                                          9  Japanischer Raum • Japanese Room  architect Bilgehan Senel designed a creative pleasure scenery. Before-
                                                                                        hand, he had the area measuring a total of 600 square metres on two

                                                                                        levels freed of subsequent installations. Besides bricks on walls and
                                                                                        ceilings, on the upper floor a stately stucco ceiling was uncovered.
                                                                                        The architect contrasted what was found with modern materials. On
                                                                                        the ground floor, the 50 metres long and, a width of seven metres, re-
                                                                                        latively narrow space is defined in its height by suspended wooden
                                                                                        arches and thus visually turned into a multifaceted tunnel. Shelves
                                                                                        are made of bright marble; out of the terrazzo floor with elegant gol-
                                                                                        den joints, seating furniture develops; oak and walnut wood add
                                                                                        warmth and dark corrugated iron flanks the rough brick walls. With
                                                                                        graphic images, striking neon signs and an Instagram photo wall,
                                                                                        Senel definitely transports the café within the historic walls into the

                                  2                                                     presence. The guest is welcomed at the long coffee bar where he
                                                                                        starts to be spoilt for choice: On the list of the barista everything the
                                                                                        heart desires is found, from the quite “normal” cup of coffee to the
                                                                                        hip cold brew coffee. Now the search for the suitable seating starts:
                                                                                        back to the protected outdoor space to observe the hustle and bustle
                                                                           9            in the street; further into the room where a DJ fills the creative space
                                                                                        with music matching the time of day or up the sculptural spiral stair-

                                                                                        case to the quiet upper level? In contrast to the busy ground floor, the
                                                                                        second floor is reserved for studying. The floor changes from stone to
                                                                                        wood and is covered with oriental carpets. Here smaller and larger
                                                                                        room niches with different ambiences offer the young and the old the
                                                                                        opportunity to work either in a group or on their own without being
