IN ANTONY
Collège Anne-Frank located in the commune of Antony,
south of Paris, is an early work by the architects Jean
Nouvel and Gilbert Lézènès. Built in 1980, the school for
around 600 pupils has now been renovated. In additi-
on to the energy-efficient retrofitting, spatial adjustments
were also necessary. Characteristic features were preser-
ved or even reproduced, and alterations were reversed.
J ean Nouvel and Gilbert Lézènès really had only a few different ele-
ments – beams, posts, coffered ceilings and façade panels – in their
construction kit, which they used to develop the strictly grid-based
layout and elevation of their early work, however. The almost classi-
cally symmetrical complex of the Anne Frank Middle School consists
of a head-end building with a high entrance hall and two side wings
which enclose a courtyard. Serial prefabrication and the two materials
exposed concrete and glass characterize the design from the late 1970s.
A plethora of graphic details, such as patterns on the façades, coloured
neon tubes, columns, black-and-white striped pyramid roofs, an upside-
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan down Modulor or stripes on the floor, were developed at the time in
close collaboration with the artist Pierre-Martin Jacot. These features
soften the austerity of the omnipresent grid. When the building complex
needed to undergo an energy-efficient renovation, MARS Architectes
faced the challenge of making structural changes without altering the
architectural expression too much. In addition to renewing the building
services, the decision was made to insulate the exterior and clad it with
fine steel mesh, as the mullion-and-transom system of the exposed-
concrete construction had developed thermal bridges. The old façade
panels have been replaced by a two-layer, glazed façade that picks up
on the original colour scheme. The pyramid roofs over the canteen,
kitchen, library and a multipurpose room also had to be completely
reconstructed. These were made of insulated steel panels, including a
reproduction of the black and white stripes on the inner ceiling made
of textile. Some of the changes that had been made over the decades
were reversed, for example, the suspended ceilings in the classrooms,
in order to expose the characteristic concrete coffered ceilings again.
The necessary adjustments to the room layout were carried out as care-
fully as possible: some areas of use had to be relocated and reassigned.
MARS Architectes completely eliminated classrooms that had become
too small situated behind the northeast courtyard façade – in favour of
