W ie ein offenes Regal, befüllt mit endlos aneinander gereihten Büchern – das eine
aufgestellt, das nächste umgekippt – umschließt eine lichtdurchlässige Keramik-
fassade aus weißen Hohlstäben den rundum verglasten Neubau der Stadtbibliothek von
Dornbirn. Über dem Grundriss eines oval-oblongen Kieselsteins erschufen Dietrich Un-
tertrifaller und Christian Schmoelz auf einer bis dato undefinierten Freifläche am Rande
der Innenstadt eine offene Begegnungszone: Der Länge nach dem Verlauf eines alten
Trampelpfads folgend, erlaubt die Ausrichtung und Öffnung im Erdgeschoss Passanten
eine barrierefreie Durchwegung. Im Gegensatz zum amorphen Außenbau ist der Innen-
raum streng orthogonal gegliedert: Auf zwei Stockwerken organisiert sich der offene Frei-
handbereich um ein zentrales, im Rechteck angelegtes Atrium herum. Im Erdgeschoss
sind Leseplätze und eine Spielzone untergebracht; Media- und Spielothek sowie ein of-
fener Makerspace finden sich im Untergeschoss. Tagsüber wird das Interieur aus erdver-
bundenen Materialien – Eichenholz und Sichtbeton – durch den Lichteinfall auf die semi-
permeable „Bücherwand“ der Fassade abwechslungsreich belichtet. Bei Abendveranstal-
tungen strahlt die offenherzige Lesestätte von innen heraus in den Stadtraum. Einen teils
durchscheinenden Fassadenvorhang aus Keramik setzten die Vorarlberger Architekten
übrigens auch beim kürzlich eröffneten, hochgelobten Haus der Musik in Innsbruck ein.

L ike open shelves filled with endless rows of books — one placed upright, the next
slightly tilted — a translucent ceramic façade consisting of white hollow elements en-
closes the all-round glazed new public library in the town of Dornbirn. On the ground
plan of an oval-oblong pebble, Dietrich Untertrifaller and Christian Schmoelz created
an open-plan meeting zone on a hitherto undefined open space on the edge of the city
center: following the course of an old footpath, the orientation and opening at ground
level allows pedestrians to pass through the building without barriers. In contrast to the
amorphous exterior, the interior is strictly orthogonal: on two floors, the open-access li-
brary area is organised around a central atrium that is laid out as a rectangle. Reading
spaces and a play zone are located on the ground floor; media and games libraries to-
gether with an open makerspace are accommodated in the basement. During the day,
the interiors that are characterised by earthy materials — oak wood and fair-faced con-
crete — is diversely lit by light shining on the semipermeable “bookshelves” of the fa-
çade. During evening events, the library shines into the urban space from within. Inci-
dentally, the architects from Vorarlberg also used a partially translucent ceramic cur-
tain-like façade at the recently opened, highly acclaimed House of Music in Innsbruck.
