                                                                                        The new building fits quite naturally into the existing
                                                                                        village structure of Täuffelen in the Bernese Seeland.
                                                                                        Morscher Architekten expanded a traditional, listed

                                                                                        D  ark, long hallways and any number of closed doors – the type
                                                                                           of the traditional school building used to be the result of the
                                                                                        learning method of frontal instruction where contents were presen-
                                                                                        ted to a group of pupils. Open educational landscapes and room
                                                                                        clusters reflect our present-day pedagogic understanding of autono-
                                                                                        mous learning. In the primary school in the community of Täuffelen,
                                                                                        children aged between four and twelve play and learn in rooms
                                                                                        which are flexibly usable. On a slightly sloping site, Morscher Archi-
                                                                                        tekten from Bern designed a three-storey extension building which
                                                                                        takes up the topography of the location with spacious seating steps
                                                                                        and staggered levels outside as well as inside. Open and enclosed
                                                                                        areas of different sizes and with different orientations combine to
                                                                                        form a differentiated spatial structure. The garden level has room for
                                                                                        two kindergarten groups whereas the two upper levels each accom-
                                                                                        modate two classrooms. Wide seating stairs lead up to the bright,
                                                                                        loosely furnished access zone which here replaces the classic school
                                                                                        hallway. It serves as a multifunction meeting point and is positioned
                                                                                        in front of the quiet, enclosed zones as a place of communication.
                                                                                        For activities requiring particular concentration, there is a room for
                                                                                        differentiated instruction room adjacent to each classroom. From in-
                                                                                        formal learning to classic classes all the way to working in small
                                                                                        groups and individually, the building structure provides the suitable
                                                                                        setting for various situations. The architectural concept is supported
                                                                                        by an unobtrusive, minimalist design. Restriction to just a few co-
                                                                                        lours and materials, warm shades of wood and exposed concrete
                                                                                        create a calm atmosphere without any distractions. Haptic, natural
                                                                                        surfaces stimulate the sensory perception. Ceilings of wooden slats
                                                                                        conceal the technical installations and thus contribute to the clear
                                                                                        appearance. Low windows with seats at child height produce the
                                                                                        connection with the exterior space and allow an unobstructed view
