E igentlich besteht die Seashore Chapel am Golf von Bohai, nahe der Hauptstadt
Peking, lediglich aus einem schmalen Spitzdach, das wasserseitig auf zwei massiven
Betonpfeilern ruht und vom Land her über zwei breite Treppenläufe erschlossen wird.
Und eigentlich ist das ausdrucksstarke Gebäude aus weiß verputztem Beton eher
Kunstobjekt als Kirche. Aber spätestens bei Flut, wenn Stützen und Treppe im Wasser
versinken und der Baukörper wie ein steinernes Boot auf dem Wasser zu schwimmen
scheint, wird die Kunst zum „Kirchenschiff“ und entfaltet ihren spirituellen Reiz.
Unterstützt wird dieser durch die ungewöhnlichen Lichtstimmungen im Inneren. Die
räum liche Erfahrung beginnt bereits mit dem 30 Meter langen Weg zur Kapelle, wo sich
nach Besteigen der Treppe das Auditorium mit großartigem Ausblick auf das Wasser und
einem direkten Austritt auf den Balkon öffnet. Es bietet rund 40 Personen Platz und ist
nach Osten ausgerichtet, weswegen das einfallende Licht immer mild und diffus er -
scheint. Unterstützt wird die ständig wechselnde Lichtstimmung durch einen schmalen
Lichtkanal zwischen Nordwand und Dach, ein Fenster im kleinen Medi tationsraum Rich -
tung Norden und eine Dreiecksöffnung, die unter dem Giebel das Kreuz sanft von oben
und unten erhellt. Das Farb- und Mate rialkonzept, basierend auf weißen Putzflächen und
Bambusfurnier für Bänke und Bodenbelag, besticht durch asketische Zurückhaltung.

T he Seashore Chapel at the Bohai Gulf, near the capital Beijing, only consists of a
small pointed roof which is supported by two massive concrete pillars on the
water side. It is accessed on the land side via two wide flights of stairs. Actually, the
expressive building made of white plastered concrete is an art object rather than a
church. However, at the latest at high tide, when the pillars and stairs sink in water
and the building seems to float on the water like a stone ship, the ecclesiastical art-
work unfolds its spiritual appeal. This attraction is emphasises by the unusual light-
ing atmosphere in the interior. The spatial experience already starts with the 30 metre
long walk to the chapel, where after stepping onto the stairs the auditorium affording
a splendid view to the water and direct access to the balcony opens up. It provides
space for about 40 people and is oriented towards the east, which is why the entering
light always appears mild and diffuse. The permanently changing light atmosphere is
supported by a narrow light channel between the northern wall and the roof, a win-
dow in the small meditation room facing north and a triangular opening, which
underneath the gable gently illuminates the crucifix from the top and bottom. The
colour and material concept, based on white plaster surfaces and bamboo veneer for
benches and the floor covering, impresses with its ascetic restraint.
