M ehr als 200 Jahre stand eine Lourdes-Kapelle nahe den Krum bacher Mooren im
Bregen zer Wald. Eine Sanierung der alten Kapelle war bautechnisch nicht mehr
mög lich gewesen und ein reines Neuabbilden des Bestandes kam für die Baukultur -
gemeinde nicht infrage. In einem mehrjährigen Prozess des vorbildlichen gemeinsamen
Planen und Bauens von Bernado Bader, mehr als 100 Krumbacher Bürgern und Hand -
werkern entstand die neue Kapelle Salgenreute. Aus Holz und Stein gebaut – mit weni -
gen, sorgfältig ausgeführten Metalldetails – wächst sie aus der Tradition einer histori schen
Ordnung heraus, die viele Ortsbilder in der Region prägt. Wie die alten Bauern häuser wird
sie durch das Sonnenlicht dunkel werden – schwarz im Süden, silbergrau im Norden. Die
einfache Grundform, bestehend aus Hauptschiff und Apsis, beruht auf annä hernd glei -
chem Grund riss wie der Bestand – nur die Raumform ist neu. Als steil aufstre ben de räum-
liche Faltung aus Holz, abgehoben vom Gelände und ohne klassischen Turm auf satz, be -
sticht sie durch eine dem Ort und dem Thema angemessene Signifikanz. Im Innern domi -
niert neben der Einheitlichkeit von Wand und Dach das sehr helle, frontal ein fal lende
Licht, das dem Raum eine besondere Stimmung verleiht. Die Marienstatue aus dem
Bestand ist nicht wie in klassischen Konzeptionen zentral, sondern seitlich be glei tend
angeordnet, sodass der Blick durch die weiße Apsis direkt hinaus in die Natur führt.

L ourdes chapel had been standing near the Krumbach Moors in the Bregenz Forest
for more than 200 years. A renovation of the old chapel was not feasible struc-
turally and a mere reconstruction of the existing building was out of the question for
the building culture community. The new Salgenreute Chapel was implemented in a
process of exemplary planning and building lasting several years, which involved
Bernardo Bader as well as more than 100 citizens and craftsmen of Krumbach. Built of
timber and stone – with few, carefully processed metal details – it develops from the
tradition of a historical order, which characterises the appearance of many localities in
the region. Like the old farmhouses, it will turn dark by sunlight – black in the south,
silver-grey in the north. The plain basic shape, consisting of the main aisle and the
apse is based on almost the same ground plan as the existing building – only the room
shape is new. As steeply ascending spatial folding of wood, lifted from the terrain and
without a classic spire, it impresses with a significance appropriate for the location and
the theme. In the interior, the uniformity of wall and roof as well as the very bright,
frontal light lend the room a special atmosphere. The statue of the Virgin Mary from
the original chapel is not centrally positioned as in classic concepts, but laterally so
that the view is guided through the white apse and directly out into nature.
