PFARRKIRCHE ST. AUGUSTIN
IN COBURG
Entwurf • Design Brückner & Brückner Architekten, Würzburg/Tirschenreuth
von • by Petra Stephan
I n 1860, the Catholic parish church at the Hofgarten was originally built in neo-
Gothic style and 100 years later, it was redesigned according to the requirements of
the liturgical reform. Since it no longer met today’s standards in terms of design and
utilisation, Brückner & Brückner subjected the church not only to a thorough refurbish-
ment and redesign, the architects also conceived a new building in the form of a cube
so that the overall ensemble now forms a partly enclosed church forecourt. The annexe
is a new liturgical room for about 30 people, where services are conducted during the
week as well as children’s services and devotions. The building accommodates a min-
istrants’ vestry, a Lourdes Grotto, toilet facilities, and a plant room. The material qual-
ity develops from the historic structures: sandstone, metal, plaster, wood, and glass –
genuine and of high quality – form the basis for a sensuous concept but are restraint.
As earthen material, the prevailing sandstone connects the annexe and the church and
mediates between existing building and contemporary extension. In the interior of the
new building, natural stone floors as well as plaster and wooden surfaces of the built-
in units form a harmonious entity. The old building structure was cleaned, stripped
down and repaired, while the new church equipment continues the history of the exist-
ing materials and combines with the artistically designed principal elements.
