SCHLEICHER.RAGALLER
IN STUTTGART
When you enter the new premises of schleicher.ragaller,
the first place you come across is the bar! Even though
the office kitchen is located behind it, the gesture is a
clear statement: the principals love to discuss their de-
signs with their employees and guests — and occasio-
nally they like to do so over a refreshing drink. Of course,
people also work here — in very contemporary interiors.
T he architectural practice of Domenik Schleicher and Michael Ra-
galler cultivates a very classical self-conception. The architects do
not want to be specialists for any particular building task, but they like
to work on as broad a field as possible — from private homes to kinder-
gartens, fire stations and churches to modern working environments.
Many of their projects are also designed and implemented in existing
building contexts and are characterised by a playful approach to pre-
existing conditions. The architects are as interested in the interior as
they are in the exterior. This is another aspect that distinguishes Schlei-
cher and Ragaller from many of their colleagues who are primarily con-
cerned with the cubature and façade design and often seem to forget
the interior. The architects have now found a new office location for
their constantly growing team in the south of Stuttgart and have taken
the opportunity to demonstrate their talents one more time. The premi-
ses are located on the second floor of a historical industrial building,
which was built around 1900 and is located somewhat hidden in the
inner courtyard of a block of buildings. The architects dissolved the exi-
sting, small-scale spatial structure in favour of larger spatial contexts.
This resulted in the layout of two elongated workspaces: one has a rat-
her classical design and parallel arranged desks, while the other is
equipped with a workbench designed by the architects themselves for
teamwork and the competition department. The two rooms are separa-
ted by a narrow strip of space that accommodates the office archive, the
plotter room and a niche for the copier. Part of the classic office area is
visually and acoustically separated as an "executive office". A third
open-plan room, which can be accessed separately via its own entrance
from the staircase, serves as a meeting and lounge room. It is furnished
with a huge round Eames table and beautiful classic Thonet chairs.
Walls and ceiling that are painted matt black separate an informal "li-
brary area", which features a yellow lounge sofa. The colour combina-
tion of black and yellow can also be found in several places throughout
Grundriss • Floor plan the office and is a common theme of the interior design concept.
