HOUSE ON THE HILL
IN MÜHLVIERTEL
City dwellers seeking refuge in the Austrian mountains dis-
cover a plot of land on a steep slope with a breathtaking
valley view. A new building offers the opportunity to design
a home that fully embraces its spectacular setting. But the
generous budget allows not only for a luxurious interior
fitout but also for a sophisticated sustainability concept
incorporating photovoltaics, crafted by local artisans.
T he location on the mountainside is spectacular. The view of
the valley is the defining element of the design by Berlin-based
architect and interior designer Carsten Wiewiorra, shaping both the
building’s form and the carefully staged interior. This begins at the ent-
rance: from the hillside road, residents enter the upper level between
a guest apartment and a garage. Here, the view is only selectively
revealed – one window frames the landscape on the opposite side
of the house. A staircase leads down directly in front of a panoramic
window into the spacious living area – an airy unity of living, dining,
cooking, sleeping and wellness zones – with a constant view over the

materials – natural stone, wood and textiles – is omnipresent. The
stone flooring flows onto the terrace and into the pool, while wood
clads both the façade and interior walls. It is the regional materials
that characterise the atmosphere and were selected, sourced and pro-
cessed in collaboration with local craftsmen: the larch façade, the grey-
stained oak panelling and the furniture fronts originate from the sur-
rounding forests, while the defining Ceppo di Grè natural stone comes
from nearby Italy. The stone, speckled with shades of grey, is used not
only for flooring but also for countertops, wall cladding in the kitchen
and bathrooms, as well as the sculptural, three-dimensional staircase-
fireplace sculpture, enveloping the surfaces in a texture that appears
both generous and invigorating. Fair-faced concrete ceilings and floor-
to-ceiling glass fronts complement the minimalist material selection,
while textiles and acoustic wall panelling ensure optimal sound quali-
ty and living comfort. The budget of this luxurious home was invested
not only in glazing the main living level, wellness areas, the pool and
high-quality materials but also in the sustainability concept. Thanks
to innovative technology, the house is nearly self-sufficient, powered
and heated through a combination of photovoltaics and geothermal
energy. Yet the true luxury of this home certainly is the experience of
