HOUSE 14A
IN HELLERUP
Building with existing structures instead of building in
existing structures: pihlmann architects’ house 14a in
Hellerup shows how the existing fabric of a building can
be used and integrated into a new design. The Danish
architects focus on the recycling of demolition material
and an unpretentious, collage-like composition of simple
building materials with plenty of living quality.
T ogether with the client and art historian Marianne Krogh, pihl-
mann architects deconstructed a two-storey, classically Danish
single-family house built in 1951 with a red brick façade, gabled roof
and regularly arranged windows. Despite its structural robustness, its
adaptability to ever-changing ways of living and working was limited.
This allowed for the creation of flexible living space with an extremely
individual signature. To achieve this, some walls and ceilings had to be
removed, as the interior of the post-war building proved to be very rigid
from today’s perspective. However, demolition materials were given a
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan new function and thus added value. For example, stone fragments from
demolished brick walls have been incorporated into the terrazzo floor,
which has been laid in the kitchen, among other places. With these ele-
ments, original craftsmanship is thus brought into consideration. Three
building cores made of new bricks for access, risers and storage space
now zone the much more open floor plans, while an open space con-
nects both floors. In some cases, larger window openings were created
to let in more light while, in others, existing window openings were
bricked up. The original window lintels in the façade refer to the past
as relics. The new brick used on the inside explicitly differs in colour,
size and installation pattern from the existing bricks, thus illustrating the
leap in time between new and old. pihlmann architects see this resi-
dential building as an artfully designed collage that interweaves past,
present and future and regards the current state merely as a phase. The
building is intended to appear as an unfinished whole, in which new
and old brick, recycled terrazzo, pine plywood for pivot doors, wall- and
ceiling elements, plaster surfaces and parquet floors in a herringbone
pattern are equally important to the unpretentious overall picture. Many
decisions were only made on the construction site. The recycling of exi-
sting resources is a topic that pihlmann architects deal with intensively
in their projects. This approach will also be reflected in the Danish
Pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale. Søren Pihlmann and his team
