Wohnbereich: Skizze zum Innenraum-Farbkonzept • Living area: sketch illustrating the interior colour concept
plan). The young architect couple was keen to sensitively and respectfully adapt the
floor plans and aesthetics to modern standards. Their concept was aimed at conscio-
usly establishing a connection to Bofill’s diverse structure without imitating it. The
lower floor of the maisonette is still reserved for cooking, eating and living , true to the
classic layout. Built-in furniture – made of cost-effective MDF panels - such as a sofa
corner, a bench in the dining area and a kitchen unit, are arranged along the walls to
save space and provide plenty of space to move around in the centre of the room. The
few window and door openings frame views of Walden 7 like pictures. The light colour Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan Grundriss Obergeschoss • Upper floor plan
concept with white walls and wooden floors particularly accentuates the unexpected
contrast to the intense colourfulness of the building. The south-facing windows provide
a view of the reddish plaster facades, while bluish light shines through the windows
facing north towards the inner courtyard, dominated by a blue-green colour. This effect
is reinforced by a few colour contrasts. Muted blue and burgundy – analogous to the
façade colours – are a recurring design theme applied to furniture and fittings.
Omnipresent circular shape – inside and out
References to Bofill’s architecture are also evident in the interior details: in the large
living room, a rounded, geometric wall opening subtly separates the cooking and di-
ning area. The semi-circular, soft-red first step of the stairs echoes the shape and co-
lour of Bofill’s. The ceramic tiles in two white-beige shades in the bathrooms recall
the gradations structuring the façade of Walden 7. The circular shape, so omnipre-
sent in the building’s configuration and morphology, is used for wall lights and mir-
rors. They could also forge a bridge to the neighbouring former cement factory La Fa-
brica, which has housed the office of RBTA - Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura and
his family’s home since the early 1970s.
