Malaga – Paracosmic Houses

In ihren Fotocollagen setzt sich die in Österreich geborene und

heute in London lebende Künstlerin Katharina Fitz mit der Ar-

chitektur der Dörfer Pedregalejo und El Palo bei Malaga auseinan-

der. Beide Orte sind heute stark vom Tourismus geprägt. Einerseits

ist damit das wirtschaftliche Überleben der Region gesichert; an-

dererseits haben die ehemals geschäftigen Fi scher dörfer viel von

ihrer Ursprünglichkeit verloren. Diese Veränderungen fängt Fitz in

ihren Bildern ein. Den Verlust der ursprünglichen sozialen Struktur,

des „Gemeinschaftssinns“, übersetzt sie dabei in die optische Iso-

lation ihrer Häuser. So schafft sie ihre eigenen „Parakosmos“, eine

künst liche, aber doch lebendige Welt, in der die sozialen und

sozio logischen Bedingungen ihrer Entstehung sichtbar bleiben.

In her photo collages, the Austrian-born artist Katharina Fitz,

who now lives in London, deals with the architecture of the vil-

lages Pedregalejo and El Palo, which are located near Malaga,

Spain. Today both places are strongly influenced by tourism.

On the one hand, the resulting revenues ensure the economic

survival of the region; on the other hand, the formerly bustling

fishing villages have lost much of their authenticity. Fitz cap-
tures these changes in her pictures. She translates the loss of

the original social structure, of the sense of community, into the

visual isolation of the buildings. In this way she creates her

very own para-cosmos, an artificial yet vital world in which the

social and sociological conditions of its creation remain visible.
