1 Das Bergdorf Pueblo Bello im Norden Kolumbiens hat rund 2.000 Einwohner. Seine
wörtliche Übersetzung, „schönes Dorf“, besitzt in Anbetracht der jüngeren Geschich -
te leider einen zynischen Beigeschmack: Ab 1990 erlebte die Bevölkerung von Pueblo
Bello über zwei Jahr zehnte grausamste Menschenrechtsverletzungen – sie wurde Opfer
von Massakern, Personen wurden von Paramilitärs verschleppt und ermordet, Häuser
wurden niedergebrannt. Für diese Taten forderte der interamerikanische Gerichtshof für
Menschenrechte 2006 eine öffentliche Entschuldigung vonseiten des kolumbianischen
Staates sowie finanzielle Entschädigun gen für die Hinterbliebenen der Opfer. Als Teil der
Wiedergutmachung entstand in Pueblo Bello ein neues Gemeindezentrum, das zugleich
auch eine Gedenkstätte sein sollte. Den Gebäudekom plex aus Sichtbeton entwarf das Ar -
chitekturbüro Taller Sín tesis in Zusammenarbeit mit der Archi tektin Angélica Gaviria und
dem Künstler Juan Guillermo Caicedo. Der Hauptzugang führt über eine breite Rampe in
das „Haus der Erinnerung“, wo voller Symbolik – mit diffus einfallendem Licht, einem
Wechsel im Bodenbelag und einer diagonal den Raum durchschneidenden, acht Meter
hohen Wand – den Opfern der Gewalt gedacht wird. Von dort aus gelangen die Besucher
in den teilweise überdachten Innenhof, an den das Gemeindezentrum ange schlossen ist.
Sein großzügiger Saal kann für die verschiedensten Zwecke genutzt werden. vc

1 The mountain village of Pueblo Bello in the northern part of Columbia has approxi-
mately 2,000 inhabitants. Unfortunately, in view of the more recent history, its literal
translation, “beautiful village", has a cynical connotation: Starting in 1990 and for more
than two decades, the villagers of Pueblo Bello experienced the most cruel violations of
human rights – they became victims of massacres, some were abducted by paramilitaries
and killed, houses were burnt down. In 2006, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
demanded a public apology from the Columbian State as well as financial compensa-
tions for the surviving dependants of the victims. As part of the compensation, Pueblo
Bello was given a new community centre which was, at the same time, intended to be a
memorial site. The building ensemble of exposed concrete was designed by the Taller
Síntesis architectural office in cooperation with the architect Angélica Gaviria and the
artist Juan Guillermo Caicedo. The main access is via a wide ramp into the “House of
Remembrance” where the victims of violence are commemorated surrounded by symbol-
ism – diffusely incident light, a change in floor covering and a diagonal wall. From there,
the visitors reach the partly covered courtyard adjacent to the community centre. „Ohne dass die Vergangenheit bekannt ist, ... • “Without the past being known, ...
