M ehr als 900.000 Menschen leben in Hwaseong-si südlich von Seoul. Gewachsen 4

M ore than 900,000 people live in Hwaseong-si, south of Seoul. The city has grown
mainly due to Dongtan, a new town built by the government in 2001 to prevent
uncontrolled growth. Over the past five years, Dongtan has seen the most active popula-
tion growth in South Korea, attracting young couples with children in particular. The city
is home to large office and industrial complexes, South Korea’s IT industry is located
here. A few months ago, the flower shop O'flower opened on the first floor of a shopping
mall in a high-rise buildings. This shop adds poetry and colour to the new town! Walls
and ceiling have a lively texture in wipe technique with a velvety surface in intense blue.
The woven vinyl floor covering alternates between blue and grey. The flowers’ colour
splendour unfolds against this backdrop. Kim Jihye, founder and owner of the interior
design label plainoddity, loves surprising concepts. That’s why she designed O'flower as
a laboratory where customers themselves can experiment with flowers – a reference to
the creativity in the IT industry. Shelves, furniture and luminaires are made of cool stain-
less steel. The central element of the shop is the triangular DIY counter. An oversized
lighting element with the same design vocabulary is suspended above it. Luminaires and
glass flasks, i.e. vases, seem to have been borrowed directly from chemistry laboratories.
