WIJNANTS FLAGSHIP
STORE IN BERLIN
„Die ungewöhnliche Materialkombination Christian Wijnants is the currently most hip fashion de-
von Silber und Messing vermittelt ein signer in Belgium. Innovative items of high-quality na-
tural fibres characterize the collections that, so far,
Gefühl des bizarren Fantastischen.“ could only be purchased online and in his store in Ant-
werp. Gonzalez Haase AAS designed the designer’s
Gonzalez Haase Berlin flagship store. The extraordinary interior design
produces a subtle setting for Wijnants’ fashion.
I t is the hand-made, improvised, unfinished, variable, provisional-
futurist but just as well the high-quality, dazzling, flashy understate-
ment visible in the interior design by Gonzalez Haase that manages to
build a successful bridge to Wijnants’ fashion: Two split-level rooms –
the salesroom and the fitting area behind it – are linked by stairs. The
ceiling height which the two rooms have in common is emphasized
by a dominant lighting system connecting the two sections and run-
ning diagonally through the entire store in the form of light strips in-
stalled parallel to each other. Inspired by the graphic fabric prints of
Wijnants’ creations of clothing, this new, strongly effective level of
light thus produced masks the existing building structure and its se-
quence of rooms. In the area of the fitting rooms, the diagonal light
strips have been rotated 90 degrees. The room division, however, is
continued with a silvery curtain at the same angle as the lighting di-
rection in the salesroom. The curtain serves as a partition to the fitting
rooms and produces an anteroom. Cooler light above the clothing-
and product displays emphasizes the elements in the salesroom, war-
mer light creates cosiness in the fitting rooms of the upper level. This
interplay of colours of light is reflected by curtains and an insulating
wall cladding in silver, by mirrored walls and silvery-rough aluminium
lighting profiles. The combination with a brass-covered counter and
the hanging system of the same material is to generate a feeling of the
“bizarre-fantastic”. The hand-bent hanging system reminds of a tree
branch and gives the room its human scale and a poetic touch. The
transition section up the stairs – an area painted in monochrome Gio
Ponti green – takes the customer into a spacious, warm and elegant
anteroom in front of the fitting rooms. In this more private section, the
green carpet was not only installed as flooring but also covers a 50-
centimetres high, all-around wall base. Due to the silvery insulating
wall panelling above it, silvery curtains and ceiling-high mirrored
walls, countless light reflections and endless spatial impressions are
