E in Musterbeispiel für Architektur der frühen Moderne: Selbstbewusst formt die Be-
tontragstruktur mit Ziegelausfachung die kubische Gestalt der Liljevalchs Konsthall
in Stockholm. Mehr als 100 Jahre liegen zwischen diesem Bestandsbau und der 2021 fer-
tiggestellten Erweiterung– ganz klar, wer zuerst da war! Mit Liljevalchs+ lassen die Ar-
chitektInnen von Wingårdhs einen Sichtbetonbau entstehen, der es versteht, sich an der
richtigen Stelle zurückzunehmen und doch den Besonderheiten ausreichend Wirkungs-
raum zu geben. 166 quadratische Oberlichter vollenden den hellgrauen Monolithen und
stimmen extrovertiert das wichtige Thema „Licht“ an. Schachtartig leiten Ortbeton-
wände – zwei Meter breit und zwei Meter hoch, zwei gerade und zwei schräg – das Ta-
geslicht in den Innenraum, wo es dank sechs verschiedener Split-Level divergent Wirkung
zeigt. Dazu fungieren großformatige Fensteröffnungen beinahe wie Bilderrahmen mit Mo-
mentaufnahmen als verbindende Elemente zwischen innen und außen – sorgen für tag-
helle Innenräume in der Ausstellung, im Museumsshop und im Café. Aus der Ferne be-
trachtet, scheint es, als wäre die Betonhaut perforiert; erst beim Näherkommen wird der
Einfluss der Glaskünstlerin Ingegerd Råman enthüllt. 6.860 kristallklare Flaschenböden
zieren in einer rostfreien Halterung die Fassade: Je nach Uhrzeit, Wetter und Blickwinkel
streuen und reflektieren die Glasschalen das Licht in unterschiedlicher Art und Weise.

A prime example of early modern architecture: the concrete support structure with
brick infill defines the cubic form of Liljevalchs Konsthall in Stockholm. More than
100 years have passed between this existing building and the extension, which was com-
pleted in 2021. With Liljevalchs+, the architects at Wingårdhs have created a fair-faced
concrete building that knows how to be restrained in the right places and yet give the
special features sufficient space to take effect. 166 square skylights complete the light grey
monolith and extrovertly raise the important topic of “light”. With a shaft-like effect, in-
situ concrete walls – two metres wide and two metres high, two straight and two slanted
– guide daylight into the interior, where it has a divergent effect thanks to six different
split levels. In addition, large window openings resembling picture frames with snaps-
hots serve as connecting elements between the inside and the outside – ensuring daylit
interiors in the exhibition area, the museum store and the café. Viewed from a distance,
it appears as if the concrete skin is perforated; only when approaching does the influence
of glass artist Ingegerd Råman become apparent: 6,860 crystal-clear bottle bases in a
stainless mounting adorn the façade. Depending on the time of day, the weather, and the
angle of view, the glass bases scatter and reflect light in different ways.
