ZALANDO OUTLET
IN FRANKFURT AM MAIN
It started in 2008 – as an online shop for shoes. Today,
customers have long since been able to find more than
just footwear on the website of the German company,
but almost everything they need to ensure a fashiona-
ble selection of clothes. Moreover, Zalando continues
to expand its activities – from virtual personal shop-
ping to stationary stores in large German cities!

C not offered the latest merchandise in the company's brick-and-
ontrary to Amazon's physical sales rooms, Zalando customers are
mortar stores. All Zalando stores are outlets. Here people can buy pro-
ducts and goods from the previous collections, often individual items,
at significantly reduced prices. The selection not only includes mass-
produced goods, but also articles from the premium sector. The chal-
lenge facing the designers from Design in Architektur was to do justice
to both of these different merchandise and target groups. For this pur-
pose, the architectural office created a two-part shop in an office buil-
ding in Frankfurt: The ground floor now accommodates the 270-
square-metre premium store, while the standard outlet with a sales
area of 1,750 square metres is located on the upper level. The two
areas are not only separated spatially, they also differ in their design
– although they are in harmony with each other. In order to do justice
to the concept – branded goods at outlet prices –, the planners deci-
ded to also work with contrasts in the interior design: Concrete cei-
lings are deliberately left unfinished, visible cables and lines corre-
spond with the newly added areas. The fixtures in the premium area
downstairs are designed in elegant black and grey and combined with
copper-coloured highlights. As in a luxury boutique, items of clothing
are presented on small tables in the entrance area – in the proper light
by luminaires specially designed for the store. Shiny copper tubes run
through the entire storey; they do not serve as clothes racks, but are
also a visible structural detail of the changing rooms. In addition, a
cosy lounge area located between the shoe shelves provides the op-
portunity to take a break from power shopping. The spacious outlet
area located on the first floor surprises with a bright overall impres-
sion – and thus provides a calm backdrop for the diverse collection
items on offer here. In order to ensure the best possible clarity and
orientation for the customer, the goods are deliberately arranged
along the edges of the area and therefore allow an unrestricted view
