MARKTHALLE
IN ADDIS ABEBA

A s the state with the fasted economic growth, Ethiopia is developing rapidly. The
political, economic and also social centre of the multi-ethnic state is the city of
Addis Ababa where recently a new shopping centre was completed in the Lideta dis-
trict. The design was based on an analysis of the already existing shopping centres
which all have two fundamental weaknesses: overheating due to glass façades and
vacancy because the sales areas are too large. That is why the Spanish architectural
office Vilalta, inspired by the colourful goings-on of the local open-air markets,
designed a shopping structure with deliberately small store areas which are given
attractive additional offers with a cinema, a bistro and reliable solar-electricity sup-
ply. The building is accessed via an atrium running diagonally through it which does
not allow direct light to penetrate. The closed façade as well was adapted to the
warm climate and exclusively designed with a regular pattern of square openings.
Varnished concrete floors, glazed areas and interiors consistently painted white fur-
thermore provide a strikingly neutral setting for the traditionally varied range of prod-
ucts which, in future, can easily be geared to the regional habits of selling and buying.
The market building thus stands for a conceptually pragmatic as well as a timeless
approach providing a new platform for public life.
