DOLCE & GABBANA STORE
IN TOKIO
Entwurf • Design Curiosity, JP-Tokio
von • by Regina Schubert
I nstead of – so far and worldwide – continuing a uniform retail format, in future the
Milan fashion company Dolce & Gabbana wants to react to the local conditions in
the countries where the products are to be sold. “We have analysed our distribution
network for many years. Now we think the time has come to end the classic concept-
store approach”, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana stated. “Our new stores will be
a place of dialogue between our aesthetics and the local cultures.” Exemplary for this
approach is the new Dolce & Gabbana Store in Tokyo. The architect responsible for the
design there was the Frenchman Nicolas Gwenael who has lived in Japan for more than
20 years. As the name of his office, Curiosity, implies, he appears to have a predilection
for the unusual. The new two-storey Dolce & Gabbana Store thus not turned out to be
a simple sales area but a mystical-theatrical light installation. Garments and accessories
are illuminated with over 400 dynamic spotlights moving according to a specific chore-
ography and then disappear into darkness again. Nicolas Gwenael immersed the walls
and the floor in matte black and only covered the surface of the plinths with a thin
panel of bright Arabescato Carrara marble. According to the architect’s claims, in addi-
tion to the playfulness of this light display there is also the intention of stimulating the
customers to become aware of the products in a new and different way.
