VALENTINO FLAGSHIPSTORE
IN LONDON

S chlichte Formen, puristische Materialien und hochwertige Handwerksarbeit: Be reits
Teppiche, textilbespannte Türseg men te
P lain forms, puristic materials and high-quality craftsmanship: the architects
at David Chipperfield have already designed timelessly elegant salesrooms
for worldwide sales activities of the Valentino fashion label. Archaic cubic volumes
and generous terrazzo surfaces meet meticulously detailed goods presentation
elements made of brass, wood and marble. Carpets, textile-covered door segments
and freestanding seating areas let the stores appear like modern palazzo salons.
The so far usual reduction of the colour spectrum to grey and white shades — as in
the flagship store in New York (AIT 3.2015) — was in the store in London designed
with a very clearly noticeable colour and material contrast through the intensified
use of oak. Besides showcases and shelves, the staircase with a lift tower are made
of wood and represents useful space which is, owing to its subtly curved stairway
connecting the four sales levels, as prestigious as the exhibition area. The same
material also characterises the store’s vestibule in the entrance area and thus forms
a conspicuous threshold between the road and the shop area. The remaining façade
was also conceptually redesigned and clad with Portland limestone and terrazzo.
The internal store rooms in the attic also have a very great loggia and are thus not
visible from the street.
