PASTICCERIA MARCHESI
IN MAILAND
Entwurf • Design Baciocchi Associates, IT-Arezzo
von • by Christine Schröder
S ince 1824, the Marchesi family has been spoiling its customers with sweet treats
and thus ranks among the oldest confectionaries in the Italian metropolis of Milan.
In the course of the decades, the room available and the range have been expanded
yet one remained loyal to the location on Via S. Maria alla Porta. With the exception
of the latest expansion on Via Monte Napoleone at the other side of the centre where
the country’s most famous designers are found. In this exclusive neighbourhood and
commissioned by the Prada Group which is a major shareholder, architect Roberto
Baciocchi gave the business a new look. The production of the delicacies continues to
be in the hands of the founding family. Dark brown marble floor and pastel green walls
characterize the sales room. An opulent cherry-wood bar merges into a counter behind
which pralines, pastries, candies and chocolate are stacked. Past them, the visitor
enters a more private café area where the wall covering changes to floral jacquard silk
wallpaper. Chairs and benches covered with dark green velvet offer seating for unlimi-
ted enjoyment. Upscale boxes for taking away the chosen delicacies are displayed in
38 glass showcases. In a wonderful way, tradition and a look ahead were combined
in the store on 120 square metres. Thanks to the modern use of materials typical of the
country, the spirit of the founder can still be felt.
