BANK BRANCH
IN RUSWIL
Bank branches may close in some places – but not in Rus-
wil in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. Here, the good old
neighbourhood branch is currently experiencing its revi-
val as a new advisory bank and a central element of the
village’s main square. In keeping with this, the sympathe-
tic interior by MACH Architektur from Zurich incorporates
regional materials and identity-generating elements.
T alking brings people together. In the changing village context of
the small Lucerne municipality of Ruswil, the new Raiffeisenbank
branch has recently taken on a connecting function by occupying the
open-plan ground floor zone of the newly developed residential and
business quarter located at the historically evolved main square. Ge-
nerously opening up to the exterior space through large window
areas, the customer zone exudes an inviting and local feel. The tran-

also present in the interior of the new building, where a central “re-
gulars’ table” invites customers passing by on their daily errands to
spontaneously engage in a conversation at any time. Short counselling

closed offices are available for internal bank procedures. The light,
MACH Architektur acoustically effective ash wood panelling of these detached cubicles
is designed as a modern interpretation of the wooden façades of re-
gional farmhouses. By contrast, the textile seat coverings in a dark
forest green relate to the colour scheme of the shutters typical of the
area. All in all, the welcoming interior featuring a combination of na-
tural and high-quality materials and handmade, locally produced
wooden furniture fits in with the concept of an identity-creating village
branch just as well as it does with the canon of values of the 17 inte-
rior designers and architects from MACH Architektur. Ever since the of-
fice’s founder David Marquardt accepted his first commission 20
years ago for a Swiss manufacturer of premium shoes, the company
has remained true to its design vocabulary with tailor-made creative
concepts, natural, high-quality materials and handcrafted details.
Thus, the ambitious project to establish a brick-and-mortar bank
branch as a popular and low-threshold contact point for the local
