LAW FIRM
IN STUTTGART
One looks in vain for the time-honoured habitus of
heavy wood panelling and equally heavy leather arm-
chairs in the newly designed Oppenländer law office at
Stuttgart Börsenplatz. With skilful lightness, the Ippo-
lito Fleitz Group tells about the transition to a kind of
value which communicates the traditional virtues such
as discretion and reliability without any conservatism.
T he unusual openness of the law office immediately catches the
eye: with a large glass front, the new entrance area opens to Stutt-
gart Börsenplatz and signals with airy lamellae panelling that the rat-
her ponderous lawyerdom is here about to develop towards more
communication and flatter hierarchies. The reception counter on the
ground floor manifests the sober-correct objectivity one expects from
lawyers, whereas the waiting room right next to it shows a much hig-
her density of details and is made to reduce insecurities. The flooring
connects the two worlds: With the material one otherwise knows from
Grundriss EG: Empfang • Ground floor plan Milan metro stations, it tells a history of transformation as a journey.
Because whereas the competition in an increasingly more complex
world is getting fiercer and young female and male lawyers have to
specialize with ever more of a focus, what also increases is their need
for more exchange, comfy places for retreating and being on a first-
name basis with the people around them. As a consequence, even the
relationship between the legal advisor and the clients is becoming
more and more personal. And this repositioning had to be represented
in the design. The free-standing staircase is also an invitation on a jour-
ney: The transition from to the what is now to what will be in the fu-
ture, from the public to the discreet, from the turmoil of everyday life
to the order of the legal paragraphs. The staircase looks correspondin-
gly sculptural and shows the way to the workstations on the upper
level. A variety of open and closed meeting options from lounge to ca-
feteria give any situation the suitable setting. Warm colours and soft
fabrics, upholstered furniture and carpets in berry shades – high-qua-
lity and homely at the same time – produce the desired atmosphere
where a relaxed espresso with the start-up client or the short break
among colleagues seems quite natural. For weightier talks in a larger
group, additional meeting rooms of different dimensions with a more
unobtrusive design offer the suitable respectable surroundings. Con-
clusion: The brand essence of the law office – to solve complex tasks
