M itten im urbanen Niemandsland an den Rändern der sizilianischen Stadt Ra gu sa
mar kiert der Entwurf des Architekten Giuseppe Gurrieri den Beginn eines vom
Stad t rat angestoßenen Re ge ne ra tionsprozesses für die südlichen Außenbezirke: Das
Kon zept für die Konvertierung eines Ti cket häuschens zu einem Straßenbistro über zeugte
durch ein kleines Budget und den Einsatz wiederverwen de ter Materialien. Mit einfachen
Mit teln hat der ortsansässige Architekt dem baufälligen Stahl be ton- Flach bau aus den
1980er- Jahren, der ursprünglich als Verkaufsstelle für die angren zen de Sport an lage dien -
te, eine zweite Hülle übergestülpt: An den mit Ze ment bauplatten ver klei de ten Stirn sei -
ten be finden sich zwei große Öff nun gen, die sich wie Schaufenster zur Landschaft öff-
nen. Dagegen gehen an den Seitenfassaden gelb ge stri chene Holzbretter, die bei Bedarf
aus ge klappt werden können, in ein flaches Satteldach über. Im Handumdrehen öffnet
sich die Eco Bar so zu einem Stra ßen ca fé, das die umgebende Einöde mit einem will -
kom menen neu en Nach bar schafts treff punkt belebt. Durch die sichtbar belassenen Be -
ton träger und -stüt zen, den Estrich be lag und die mit Eisenblechen verkleidete Bar erhält
der Raum ei nen in dus triellen Charakter. Eine dunkelgrüne, mit einem Polyurethan-Lack
be schich te te Wand hinter der Theke wird dem als Farbakzent ge gen ü ber ge stellt und
zo niert den qua dra tischen Grundriss in Gast raum und dienende Räume.

I n the middle of the urban no man’s land on the outskirts of the Sicilian town of
Ragusa, the project by architect Giuseppe Gurrieri marks the start of a regeneration
process in the southern suburbs, which have been initiated by the town council. The
concept for the conversion of a ticket booth into a street bistro impresses with a low
budget and the reuse of materials. With very simple means, the local architect put a
second envelope over the dilapidated flat reinforced concrete building dating from the
1980s, which originally served as a ticket stand for the neighbouring sports ground.
Two large openings are cut into the front sides clad with cement boards, which open
up to the landscape like shop windows. At the side façades, however, yellow painted
wooden boards, which can be folded down if required, merge into a flat saddle roof.
Before you know it, the Eco Bar can thus be opened up to serve as a street café, which
enlivens the surrounding wasteland as a welcome new meeting place for the neigh-
bourhood. The concrete girders and columns, which were left visible, the screed floor-
ing and the bar clad with sheet iron lend the room an industrial character. This is con-
trasted with a colour highlight in the form of a dark green wall with a polyurethane
paint coat behind the bar, which divides the square floor plan into a guest area and
the service rooms.
