Stuttgart 21

The focus topic On-Site is dedicated to one of the largest construction projects for public rail transport in urban areas: Stuttgart 21, the project for the new Stuttgart railway station.

With Angelika Schmid from Werner Sobek and Michael Rathgeb from ingenhoven associates, two experts from the major lead offices provide insight into this gigantic project. In addition, Jan Schmitz, Head of Sales Technical Covers at ACO Passavant Detego, reports on his involvement.

As early as 1997, an international competition was held in which the design by ingenhoven associates won 1st prize. The construction phase, which was initiated in 2010, includes extensive new construction and conversion measures of the station area. The listed main building by Paul Bonatz and Friedrich Eugen Scholer from 1910 is to be converted into a reception hall for the light-flooded new station concourse. Werner Sobek is supervising the execution of the complex construction: a shell roof around 450 metres long and 80 metres wide rests on 28 goblet supports made of white fair-faced concrete. The material-saving shell structure is both aesthetically and technically demanding and represents a new challenge for architects and engineers.
