                                                                                        IN BARCELONA





                                                                                        For five generations, the passion of the Balfegó Family
                                                                                        has entirely been dedicated to one of the most impor-
                                                                                        tant food fish: bluefin tuna. The company has become
                                                                                        one of the leading producers of tuna. Now there is a
                                                                                        place in Barcelona that is dedicated not only to food,
                                                                                        but whose interiors are entirely dedicated to the red-
                                                                                        fleshed sea creatures and their habitat.


                                                                                        W    hen the narrowness in Barcelona's old town became unbear-
                                                                                             able in the 19th century, the Eixample district  was created
                                                                                        under the direction of architect Ildefons Cerdà. Square blocks with an
                                                                                        edge length of 133 metres, traversed by 20-metre wide streets, form a
                                                                                        geometric grid typical of the Spanish metropolis.  The magnificent
                                                                                        Avenida Diagonal cuts through this austere form and connects the
                                                                                        Collserola Mountains with the sea just outside the city. The designers

                                                                                        and Lucas Echeveste – draw their inspiration for the Tunateca Balfegó
                                                                                        from the ocean. On 350 square meters, the brand presents itself and
                                                                                        shows all characteristics and possible applications of the product:
                                                                                        from the occurrence of the fish in the oceans to fishing and profes-
                                                                                        sional preparation. The main room - or the Blue Room - is accessed
                                                                                        from the road and accommodates the restaurant. Blue walls and cur-
                                                                                        tains, artistic dark floors, contrasting  wooden furniture,  and red
                                                                                        upholstery provide the stage for an expansive installation: the trans-
                                                                                        parent fish suspended from the ceiling surround the three columns of
                                                                                        the five-metre-high room like a huge shoal of tuna. Also on the ground
                                                                                        floor is the "Ronqueo Room", named after the manual cutting tech-
                                                                                        nique of bluefin tuna, which is presented here in workshops. The wall
                                                                                        panelling is not only a decorative design tool: on the one hand, the
                                                                                        tiles are easy to clean and on the other hand, the pentagonal, blue
                                                                                        and silver-coloured tiles interpret fish scales. Deep red highlights for

                                                                                        wall recesses and chair upholstery complete the picture. Thanks to
                                                                                        floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, the two rooms on the upper floor can be
                                                                                        used for meetings, events, or intimate dinners. Delicately perforated
                                                                                        wood is used to clad walls and floors and, thanks to its reddish shim-
                                                                                        mer, allows associations to the firm, red meat. In the Tunateca, El the
                                                                                        team of Equipo Creativo proves once again that they can combine
                                                                                        materials, shapes, and colours with a great deal of sensitivity to cre-
                                                                                        ate a harmonious overall impression - all the way to a seascape that
