2 SHAPE, das ist die Kurzform von Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe —
hinter dieser Begrifflichkeit verbirgt sich nichts Geringeres als das militärische
Haupt quartier der NATO. Sitz der internationalen Institution ist seit 1967 das belgische
Mons. Welche Stadt könnte also besser für den Bau eines Interpre tations zentrums für
Militärgeschichte geeignet sein? Auch Mons stellte sich diese Frage und beauftragte
kurzerhand das Architekturbüro Pierre Hebbelinck mit dem Umbau eines historischen
Wasserwerkes zum Museum. Neben der Sanie rung des denkmalgeschützten Ziegel -
baus wurde eine Erweiterung nötig, die in Form von zwei zeitgenössischen Flügel -
anbauten erfolgte. Weiß gestrichen und gänzlich introvertiert, heben sich die Neu bau -
ten deutlich vom Bestand ab. Die so entstandenen, fensterlosen Ausstellungs räume
ermög lichen eine düstere – und damit zum Thema passende – beklemmend drama -
tische Themenins zenie rung. Dem gegenüber steht der mittig im Gebäude komplex lie-
gende Altbau, der mit seinen großen Fensterfronten und dem überwiegend weißen
Innen ausbau zum luftigen Empfangs- und Kommu ni ka tions bereich wird. Er stellt eine
Zäsur zwischen Dauer aus stellung im linken Flügel und temporärer Ausstellung im

2 behind this concept is nothing less than the military headquarters of NATO. Since

1967, the headquarters of the international institution has been Mons in Belgium. Which
city could thus be better suited for building an interpretive centre of military history? In
Mons, one also asked this question and without further ado commissioned the Pierre
Hebbelinck architectural office with converting the historic waterworks into a museum.
Besides renovating the listed brick building, an extension also became necessary which
was constructed in the form of two modern wings. Painted white and looking complete-
ly closed from the outside, the new buildings now clearly stand out from the existing
fabric. The thus resulting, window-less exhibition rooms make staging sombre – there-
fore befitting the subject – oppressive dramatic themes possible. Contrasting this is the
old building in the centre of the complex which, with its large window façades and the
predominantly white interior fittings, becomes an airy reception- and communication
area. It is a dividing line between the permanent exhibition in the left wing and any tem-
porary exhibition in the right wing. The planners interrupt this strict division with a
walkway running 15 metres diagonally through the foyer on the upper level and thus
designed an obvious sensuous, exciting circuit through all the exhibition rooms.
