2 Alle zwei Jahre wird die japanische 17.000-Einwohner-Stadt Nakanojo zu einer be -
sonderen Touristenattraktion: Dann nämlich, wenn dort im September wieder die
Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst stattfindet. Anlässlich der Biennale im vergangenen
Jahr errichtete das Tokioter Architekturbüro Kubo Tsushima eine neue öffentliche Toilette
im Zentrum der Stadt, auf dem Parkplatz des historischen Ringshoji-Tempels. Über den
bloßen Komfort für Besucher und Einwohner hinaus sollte die Anlage ein architektoni-
sches Statement sein. Mit ihrem Entwurf zweier annähernd halbkreisförmiger, gegen-
einander verschobener Räume verzichteten Hideaki Kubo und Yumi Tsushima auf die
ihrer Meinung nach wahre Ursache für den desolaten Zustand vieler öffentlicher Sanitär -
ein richtungen: die dunkle Ecke, in der sich Dreck und Getier sammeln können. Im klei-
neren Teil des Gebäudes ist das Herren-WC untergebracht, im größeren das Damen-WC,
das auch barrierefrei ist. Sie sind in entgegengesetzte Richtungen ausgerichtet. Dadurch
er gibt sich ein natürlicher Abstand zwischen Damen- und Herrentoilette; zugleich ist das
Gebäude sowohl von der Straßenseite als auch vom Parkplatz aus zugänglich. Für eine
angenehm helle Atmosphäre im Inneren sorgen neben den weißen Wänden aus verzink-
tem Stahlblech vor allem die Öffnungen der Räume nach oben. Trotz seiner minimalen
Fläche erfüllt das Häuschen mehrere Funktionen: Es ist Wegweiser für Passanten und
Autofahrer, komfortable Sanitäranlage und Symbol für die Stadt in einem. vc

2 Every two years, the Japanese City of Nakanojo turns into a tourist attraction
when in September the Biennale contemporary art takes place there. On
the occasion of the Biennale last year, Tokyo-based architectural practice Kubo
Tsushima opened a new public toilet in the city centre, in the car park of the historic
Ringshoji Temple. Beyond the mere comfort for visitors and locals, the facility ought
to be an architectural statement. With their design of two, almost semicircular,
displaced rooms, Hideaki Kubo and Yumi Tsushima do without what they think is
the true cause for the desolate condition of many public sanitary facilities: the dark
corner where dirt and creatures can gather. The smaller part of the building accom-
modates the gents’ toilet, the larger one houses the ladies’ WC, which is also
barrier-free. They are oriented in opposite directions. This results in a natural
distance between the ladies’ and the gents’ toilets; simultaneously, the building
is accessible from both the street and the car park. White walls made of galvanised
sheet steel as well as the upward openings of the rooms create a pleasantly bright
atmosphere. Despite its minimal floor area, the small house fulfils several functions:
it is a signpost for passers-by and drivers, comfortable sanitary facility and symbol
