I nspiriert von dem Prinzip eines klassischen Sehrohrs, auch Periskop genannt, ent-
wickelten die Architekten von Hexia eine freistehende Toilettenkabine, die den
Nutzern nicht nur einen funktionalen wie sichtgeschützten Rückzugsort bietet, son-
dern auch einen Ausblick in die Umgebung ermöglicht. Das Projekt entstand nördlich
der Millionenstadt Jiaxing im Rahmen eines Auftrages zur Gestaltung einer öffentli-
chen WC-Anlage inmitten eines Naherholungsgebietes mit malerischer Seenland-
schaft. Statt die WC-Funktion möglichst kompakt zu gestalten und von der Außen-
welt abzuschirmen, suchten die Planer nach einer Lösung, die sich zum einen mit
einer dorfähnlichen Struktur spielerisch in die Landschaft einfügt und zum anderen
die Umgebung selbst in den Innenraum holt. Es entstand eine Gruppe von metall-
verkleideten WC-Kabinentürmen, die durch ihr einfaches, aber effektives Spiegelsy-
stem je nach Gebäudehöhe und Ausrichtung einen anderen Landschaftsausschnitt
für den Nutzer im Inneren sichtbar machen. Dabei ist jede Einheit, abgesehen von
ihrer Baukörperhöhe mit zwei auf zwei Metern Grundfläche, ausstattungs- und bau-
gleich. Auf diese Weise ist den Architekten nach eigenen Aussagen ein WC-Entwurf
gelungen, der in Masse produzierbar und installierbar ist und darüber hinaus auch
an urbanen Standorten eine gute Figur machen kann. hs

I nspired by the principle of a classical periscope, the architects at Hexia developed
a free-standing restroom cubicle that offers the user a private space that is both
functional and visually shielded from views, and at the same time affords views of
the surrounding landscape. The project was developed north of the Chinese mega-
city of Jiaxing as part of a commission that comprised the design of a public restroom
facility in a recreational area with a picturesque lake landscape. Instead of making
the toilet function as compact as possible and shielding it from the outside world,
the planners were looking for a solution that, on the one hand, playfully blends into
the landscape with a village-like structure and, on the other, brings the surroundings
into the interior. The result is a group of metal-clad towers housing toilet cubicles,
each of which, thanks to their simple but effective mirror system, make a different
section of the landscape visible to the user inside, depending on the height and ori-
entation of the unit. Apart from the height of the modules, all of which have a foot-
print of two by two metres, each unit is identical in terms of equipment and con-
struction. According to the architects, this is how they have succeeded in creating a
restroom design that can be mass-produced and installed and that can also cut a
