link between the North Sea and the Baltic, is considered one of the most liveable
cities in the world. People here place great emphasis on their leisure activities. There
are many places in the city, which is geographically spread over two large and several
small islands, where you can jump directly into the sea for a swim. The metropolis
on the water is also the cycling capital of the world. Moreover, Copenhagen has a lot
to offer in terms of architecture.

Saturday: a day between elephants and bulls

r 10 a.m. – Our first stop is the Elephant Gate (1), which was built in 1902 according
to plans by Vilhelm Dahlerup on the site of the former Carlsberg Brewery in the we-
stern part of the city. The bridge and tower building, supported by four granite ele-
phants, originally served as a silo and water tank. In the past decade, the historical
brewery buildings have been lovingly refurbished and put to new uses. The wonderful
Ottila boutique hotel (2) is also part of the ensemble. Not far from the hotel is one
of Copenhagen’s most unusual art locations: the old cisterns (3) from the nineteenth
century. In the pitch-black underground halls, once a freshwater reservoir for the city,
you can travel from one room to the next in small rowing boats. The changing art ex-
hibitions float above the water. Only occasional light sources make the objects CREATE BEYOND CONVENTION
