Brakel in der ländlich geprägten belgischen Provinz Ostflandern verfügt seit Septem -
ber über eine neue, emblematische Polizeistation, entworfen von der Organization
for Permanent Modernity. Auffallend sind die beiden Schlüsselelemente – die soge-
nannten Mega-Bricks und die Atlanten. Getragen wird die Polizeistation sinnbildlich
von 12 gigantischen, aus weißem Kunststoff gefertigten Stützen in Form von Polizisten.
Die Figuren messen 3,60 Meter und sind damit doppelt mannshoch. Die Architekten
beziehen sich mit diesem Motiv auf die seit der Antike in der Architektur verwendeten
Atlanten oder Karyatiden, die als überlebensgroße, muskulöse Figuren an die Stelle
von Stützen traten. Unter dem Gebäude stehen Parkplätze für die Polizei flotte zur
Verfügung. Eine künstliche Landschaft führt zum öffentlichen Eingang im ersten
Obergeschoss. Die Fassade der beiden oberen Geschosse setzt sich aus großen, nicht-
tragenden Sandwichelementen zusammen. Die rechteckigen Stahlrahmen sind außen
mit lediglich 2,3 Zentimeter dünnen, auf Zementplatten geklebten Ziegeln bestückt –
eine Interpretation der regionalen Backsteinkultur. Auf der Raumseite wurden die
Sandwichelemente zu Wandschränken ausgebaut.
Since September, Brakel in the rather rural Belgian province of East Flanders is
proud of a new, emblematic police station which was designed by the Orga ni -
zation for Permanent Modernity. Proper eye-catchers are the two key elements –
the so-called mega-bricks and the Atlantes. The police station is symbolically sup-
ported by twelve gigantic columns consisting of white synthetic material and in the STARK
shape of police officers. The figures are 3.60 metres high and thus twice as large as
in life. With this motif, the architects refer to the Atlantes or Caryatides which are
known in architecture from antiquity when they were used as larger than life, mus-
cular figures in place of columns. Beneath the building, parking spaces are provi-
ded for the police force. An artificial landscape leads to the public entrance on the IN FORM UND
first upper level. The façade of the two upper levels consists of large, not load-
bearing sandwich elements. On the outside, the rectangular steel frames are equip-
ped with bricks which are only 2.3 centimetres thin and are glued onto concrete FUNKTION
panels – an interpretation of the local brick culture. In the rooms on the inside, the
sandwich elements were designed to be cabinets.
