S eit 2014 ist der spanische Architekt Roman Izquierdo Bouldstridge bereits selbststän-
dig, nun hat er im Barceloneser Trendviertel El Born sein Architekturbüro neu einge-
richtet. Auf wenigen Quadratmetern, mit ebenso wenigen Materialien und Farben, aber
mit vielen guten Ideen hat er ein Maximum an nutzbarer Bürofläche aus dem überschau-
baren Ladenlokal herausgeholt. Sein Rezept ist denkbar einfach: Den Bestand aus der
Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entkernen und bis auf die reine Konstruktion freilegen, über-
flüssige Öffnungen schließen, Mauerwerk, Sandsteinpfeiler, Holzbalkendecke und Boden
mit weißem Anstrich überziehen und eine Art Regalsystem aus Kanthölzern als modulare
Struktur einstellen. Letztere ist dem japanischen Kultursymbol Torii nachempfunden, das
den torartigen Übergang vom Profanen zum heiligen Shinto-Schrein markiert und ein ge-
stalterisches Mitbringsel aus seinen Lehrjahren in Japan bei Kengo Kuma und Junya Ishi-
gami ist. Die selbsttragende Struktur fungiert als Raumtrenner, nimmt äußerst flexibel
zahlreiche weiße Regalbretter, drei 3,40 Meter lange Tischplatten sowie das Beleuch-
tungssystem auf – alles großzügig belichtet durch die ehemaligen Schaufenster. Im hinte -
ren, fensterlosen Bereich finden das Chefbüro, ein ruhiger Besprechungsraum sowie die
Nassräume ihren angemessenen Platz. Dass dieses Konzept bestens funktioniert, hat
Bould stridge bereits 2015 mit dem Mit Mat Mama Store, ebenfalls in Barcelona, erprobt.

S panish architect Roman Izquierdo Bouldstridge has been self-employed since
2014 and has now set up his own architectural office in Barcelona's trendy El Born
district. On a few square metres, with just as few materials and colours, but with
many good ideas, he has managed to get the maximum usable office space out of the
confined shop floor. His approach is very simple: Gutting the existing structure from
the mid-19th century and exposing its shell, closing superfluous openings, painting
brickwork, sandstone pillars, the wooden beam ceiling and floor white, and installing
a kind of shelving system from squared lumber as a modular structure. The latter is
modelled on the Japanese cultural symbol of Torii, which marks the gate-like transi-
tion from the profane to the holy Shinto shrine and is a design souvenir from his ap-
prenticeship in Japan at Kengo Kuma and Junya Ishigami. The self-supporting struc-
ture acts as a room divider, flexibly holding numerous white shelves, three 3.40-metre
long table tops and the lighting system – all generously lit through the former shop
windows. The windowless rear provides adequate space for the executive office, a
quiet meeting room and the wet rooms. Bouldstridge already tested the functionality
of this concept in 2015 with the Mit Mat Mama Store, also located in Barcelona.
