Der Mariendom im Wallfahrtsort Neviges ist zweifellos einer der bedeutendsten Sakralbauten
des 20. Jahrhunderts und gilt als Hauptwerk Gottfried Böhms. 1968 wurde die Kirche geweiht,
rund 18 Jahre später erhielt der gebürtige Hesse als erster Deutscher den Pritzker-Preis. In der
Serie „Mariendom“ nähert sich Fotograf David Altrath dem Sujet klar und realistisch mit der
Kamera – und hält es doch mit äußerst sentimentalem Ausdruck fest. Es ist, als verbiete Böhms
frei-polygonale Sichtbeton-Baukunst eine nüchterne Bildsprache, eine sachliche (Farb-)Foto-
grafie. Details wie die Kirchenfenster entwarf der Architekt selbst. Als Mariensymbol ziert die
Rose das Glas und färbt den kalten Béton Brut atmosphärisch in kräftigen Rottönen.

The Neviges Mariendom is one of the most important sacred buildings of the 20 century and
Gottfried Böhm’s main work. The church was consecrated in 1968 and, some 18 years later,
the architect was the first German to receive the Pritzker Prize. In the Mariendom series, pho-
tographer David Altrath approaches the subject clearly and realistically and yet captures it
with an extremely sentimental expression. It is as if Böhm’s free-polygonal exposed-concrete
architecture forbids a sober visual language, matter-of-fact (colour) photography. Details such
as the church windows were designed by the architect himself. As a symbol of Mary, the rose
adorns the glass and atmospherically colours the cold Béton Brut in strong red tones.
