E ine halbe Stunde dauert die Fahrt von Sydney Central Station in den Vorort Punch-
bowl im Südwesten der Metropole. Die Gegend gehört zu den kulturell vielfältigsten
der Stadt. Mehr als ein Drittel der Bewohner ist muslimischen Glaubens. Seit 1996 be-
müht sich die Gemeinschaft um den Bau einer neuen Moschee samt Gemeindezentrum.
17 Jahre dauerte allein der Genehmigungsprozess! Immer wieder gab es vonseiten der
Politik Einwände. (Wie sehr Australien mit der Integration von muslimischen Einwande-
rern hadert, wurde zuletzt im März bei dem durch einen Australier verübten Terroran-
schlag auf zwei Moscheen im neuseeländischen Christchurch deutlich.) Gegen alle Wi-
derstände konnte nun jedoch der erste Bauabschnitt mit der Moschee eröffnet werden.
Das Gemeindezentrum wird in den nächsten Jahren folgen. Für den Gesamtentwurf ist
der griechischstämmige Architekt Angelo Candalepas aus Sydney verantwortlich. Er ent-
wickelte das Gotteshaus über einem quadratischen Grundriss. In der Ostecke erhebt
sich – um 45 Grad verdreht – das Minarett sowie der Treppenaufgang zu zwei in den Mo-
schee-Innenraum eingeschobenen Frauenlogen im ersten und zweiten Obergeschoss. Die
der Ost ecke gegenüberliegenden Außenwände sind wiederum um annähernd 45 Grad
geneigt. Zusammengesetzt sind sie aus 102 „Betonschüsseln“, die ein modernes Stalak-
titengewölbe bilden, wie es aus der traditionellen islamischen Architektur bekannt ist.

T he journey from Sydney Central Station to the suburb of Punchbowl in the south-
west of the metropolis takes half an hour. The district is very culturally diverse.
More than a third of the inhabitants are Muslim. Since 1996, the community has been
making efforts to build a new mosque with a community centre. The approval process
alone took 17 years because of repeated objections from politicians. (The extent to
which Australia is struggling with the integration of Muslim immigrants was illustra-
ted last March with the terrorist attack by an Australian on two mosques in Christ-
church, New Zealand.) Against all odds, however, the first construction phase com-
prising the mosque could now be opened. The community centre will follow in the
next few years. Angelo Candalepas, an architect of Greek origin from Sydney, is re-
sponsible for the overall design. He developed the sacred building on a square ground
plan. In the east corner, the minaret – twisted by 45 degrees – rises as well as the stair-
case to the two women's boxes on the first and second floor, which protrude into the
interior. The external walls opposite the east corner are again inclined by approxima-
tely 45 degrees. They are composed of 102 "concrete bowls" forming a modern sta-
lactite vault, as is known from traditional Islamic architecture.
