B ühne frei für diesen unkonventionellen Ansatz, Neubau und denkmalgeschützten
Bestand miteinander zu verbinden: Mit theatralischer Geste tritt die Schul er wei -
terung vom Bestandsgebäude zurück und generiert mit einem großzügig gerahmten
„Bühnen portal“ und Laubengängen als Zuschauerrängen eine theaterähnliche Situa -
tion. Im Zuge der Erweiterung der traditionsreichen Mädchenschule um Klassen räume
für die unteren Jahrgänge finden Wilson Architects einen respektvollen Umgang mit
dem Bestand. Durch die Platzierung des Innenhofs und die unmittelbare Ein bin dung
in die neue Grund riss konstellation wird die un spek takulär-prag ma tische Rück seite des
alten Schulgebäudes zu einer neuen, belebten Mitte. Über eine groß zü gi ge Dach öff -
nung erhält der In nen hof bis ins Erdgeschoss Tageslicht und wird so zu einer geschütz -
ten Aufenthaltsfläche mit Pausen hof charakter. Die neuen Klassenräume lassen sich mit
Schie be türen über die gesamte Breite zum Hof hin öffnen und schaffen damit flie -
ßende Übergänge zwischen Aufent halts-, Verkehrs- und Unterrichtsflächen. Um dem
vier geschossigen Ge bäude nach außen das vergleichsweise massive Erscheinungsbild
im Kontext der Bestands gebäude zu nehmen, präsentiert sich der Neubau zur Stra ßen -
seite in zwei Teilen: Die beiden oberen Geschosse scheinen über dem Sockelgeschoss
zu schweben, das mit einem transluzenten Metallnetz umhüllt ist.

C urtains up for this unconventional approach of linking a new building with
listed existing fabric: With a theatrical gesture, the school extension recedes
from the existing building and generates a theatre-like setting with the generously
framed “proscenium” and arcades as the galleries for the audience. In the course of
the extension of the girls’ school steeped in tradition with classrooms for the lower
grades, Wilson Architects handled the existing fabric in a respectful way. With the
addition of the inner courtyard and its immediate integration into the new layout
constellation, the unspectacular-pragmatic rear of the old school building becomes
a new, busy hub. The patio is provided with daylight all the way to the ground floor
via a spacious roof opening and is thus turned into a protected area with the
atmosphere of a schoolyard. With sliding doors, the new classrooms can be opened
across their whole widths towards the patio and thus create flowing transitions
between the recreational, the circulation and the teaching areas. To rid the
four-storey building of the relatively massive appearance on the outside in the con-
text of the existing buildings, the new building presents itself in two parts towards
the street: The two upper floors seem to float above the base level which is covered
with a translucent metal mesh.
